Right Angle Crosses

In this Cross of the Sphinx the Sun in the 13th gate is going to condition the way in which this cross is going to operate. This cross is going to operate through what the 13 is - a gate of being empathetic; it is a gate of being open. It is part of the Channel of the Prodigal child. It is all about being able to store experiential information, and being able to hold secrets inside and to be able to bring those secrets out. The Right Angle Cross of the Sphinx is very common. They are here to give guidance and to give direction to others.

The way in which they give direction is going to be cued to that 13. In other words, that 13h gate is always looking backward. It is never looking forward. It is always looking at the past. It is reminiscing, it is remembering, it is collating experience. It is the root of the memory that becomes history. Thus, when you meet somebody with the 13tn gate as the prime source of activation of this cross, don't ask them where to go tomorrow. That is not what they are here for. Ask them what happened yesterday, ask them what happened last month, and then you are going to get the value of their guidance.

Remember something about Sphinxes - they are very, very important to our evolutionary movement. The entire Sphinx setup is rooted in the 1st and 2nd gates moving down ultimately to the 14, the Keeper of the Keys, who get the sacral energy necessary to bring the mutative force of direction into the world. The Sphinx is always representing direction. At some point, there is going to be a time when people are going to come together according to their crosses. The four variations of the Right Angle Cross of the Sphinx have people with their Sun either in the 13, in the 7, in the 1, and in the 2. Only if you bring the four of them together are you really going to get a perspective on direction. After all each and every one of them has their own way. Of course they end up influencing everyone else in their own way.

If you're a Sphinx and you're standing in line at the supermarket checkout counter and there are a few people behind you and a few people in front of you - they are all in your aura. You are directing them, and giving them a new direction. Now if the first variation of this right angle cross, with the Sun in the 13, shows up, then the person they are standing beside suddenly starts thinking about something that happened to them yesterday. "Why did I take that direction," he is suddenly thinking. The Sphinx that is in his aura is initiating this.

The moment that you lose your personal vanity, you'll begin to understand something - all of the Sphinxes in the world are driving all of us. May be they're driving us nuts, but they are driving us. There is nothing that we can do about that. All of them together, they are all representing that theme within the program to give direction to the totality.

If we eliminated all the 10th gates on Earth, no one would know how to behave. It would be а wild place. Nobody would know how to survive, and we would all just die off. The fact is that the moment that you stop taking it personally, you'll see that - look at your chart and there is all of this white space. On the computer program you can do a reversal. In doing that reversal, you can see all the things that you don't have, like the 40 gates you don't have. There are 64 gates and you have maybe 40; you don't have all of them. There is all this stuff that you don't have. You have to see where you get it - we live in the world. All of these Sphinx's are running around pushing us in different directions, and we need them. But you see we can't trust them by themselves - got to have a Sphinx convention. If you don't have a Sphinx convention, don't trust them, because it is all just a perspective.

This right angle Sphinx is not interested in giving anybody direction. Why should they be? "I got no karma." As a right angle they are only interested in finding direction for themselves. Of course, they end up being lost most of time. They just do. They are self-absorbed trying to figure out if this is the direction, if that's the direction. Every time they walk by somebody, they actually do something valuable in return. Their life is a mess, but everybody else is getting direction.

When you meet somebody, look at her chart, and see "aha, a Sphinx," because you get a lot of them - look where the Sun is. It is going to tell you so much about what she is here for. If you come in on this Cross, you are here to create a living vibrant past with everything you do. These are people who love their past. They have scrapbooks of their past, with little mementos from when they went to see this or had that. They have all this stuff from the past. It is their own self-absorption, and we need them after all. One of the most important things to understand about the nature of the Sphinx, regardless of what you think about the person that is carrying it, that structure within them has enormous impact on everybody around them.

So it begins here, think about that. This is not arbitrary that we start here. This is the beginning place because this is the end. This is the true Alpha and Omega, in the sense, it's the way that the program works. When the time will come for the world that we live in and the forms that we have to be history, we will see from the global themes, that is the larger themes, that the larger movement of the autumnal equinox will be in the 13th gate. In other words, this is a beginning place and it is an ending place.

Remember that this is the Quarter of Initiation, and what makes this the Quarter of Initiation is that it's not about anything other than mind. This is what we are all caught up in. This is what makes us different. It is this incredible initiation of mind that you find in this quarter. It begins with the Fellowship of Man, this gate of enormous influence on the abstract process, because it is the collector of human experience. It is out of this capacity to remember, and ultimately the capacity to articulate out of that remembrance, that allows us to make enormous leaps in terms of our ability to create a dense mental maya. So that we can finally, after millennium and millennium of frustration, figure out how basic things actually work. But this is the mind field, so when you meet somebody that is a Sphinx and their Sun is in the 13th gate, you know that they are beginning and closing energies.

Someone with the Sun in the 13th really understands the quote, "The future is the past racing towards us." That is where we get our clichés about history repeating itself and all of these things - this is all from the 13. The very first cross variation of a right angle cross with the Sun in the 13th gate is a 1/3. This primary beginning always is in the structure, meaning that with the Personality Sun in the 1s line and the Design Sun in the 3rd line, that if the foundation is not solid then anarchy is demanded. If the foundation is not correct, then the foundation must be torn down, in order for a new foundation to be built.

When these Sphinxes come in - what they are looking for are all of the foundations that don't work. That is their job, and they store them mentally. They are storing them in order to do one of two things - either to suffer as martyrs with deep pessimism for the rest of their lives, or to discover out of that, and in turn be able to impact on others and teach others what does not work. They are very important guides for us.

When the Sun is in the 13th gate in the 4th line and the Design Sun shifts, it moves from the 1st hexagram into the 43rd hexagram. And in moving into the 43rd hexagram we obviously have a totally different configuration.

When the mutation comes that is bringing awareness to the emotional system, only the experiential stream out of the emotional system that will not experience this mutation. This stream starts in the 41 and ends in the 35. and is the stream of feeling. This stream of feelings, which is the human experiential way, will disappear because the human form will go with it. So it is something important to understand that the nature of this stream is to not be capable of awareness, as this leads to the potential of all experience. Fools do rush in. Oh yes, and desire makes fools out of all of us. In the beginning, it was a sound, but it was a wolf's whistle. Desire really gets to you. So when you come to this cross of Contagion, you've got this incredible desire that says, "Yeah, we can kill the bear, but what about the elephant. Let's get the elephant. I'd like the elephant." It starts a whole process of saying that there's more. There's got to be more.

Now that we are able to control the tribe in the next valley, maybe there's another valley. Maybe there is more. I don't want to eat these berries, maybe there is more? And the desire leads to expectation. So this is the beginning of the human expectation process. Without this 30n gate of desire, we wouldn't be here. It is so important, as it moves us in such a profound way - because what desire does is tell us that there isn't anything out there that we can't try. Remember it is collective.

Think about the beginning of healing. If no one had this stream or aspects in this stream, we'd never figure out what works. Two people are walking along in a field and all of a sudden one sees some mushrooms. Desire is unaware and doesn't say; "Now if I eat this I could drop dead." It's not into that. What it is into is the expectation - "if I eat this, aha who knows?

Maybe it is incredible. Maybe the taste is wonderful. Maybe I'll have a fantastic experience. Maybe l'll get really stoned." So he eats it and drops dead. The other person then says, "Don't eat these mushrooms anymore." This is the experiential way. Without fools rushing in, there would be no way to find out which mushrooms do what - we'd no way of finding out what heals and what doesn't. "Oh, this is poisonous, put that in her cup."

We learn through that process. It's really very funny, because it's the blind leading the blind, and the dumb leading the dumber. For those of you that are not connected to any of that, you can appreciate all of that. You can take the mushroom that you know won't kill you, but will make you high. You don't care about all those dead soldiers back there. It doesn't matter. You see that is how it works.

Desire is an incredible thing. It's the way in which the Gods really laugh at us, by getting us really excited about something, so somebody else can benefit from our death. Isn't that amazing? If you take that personal, boy are you in trouble. So when the person comes in on that cross, and it doesn't matter if that is way back then or now. It's the same person that is taking a hike with a friend that sees a mushroom. She will actually just grab it and stick it in her mouth, not thinking - she's still doing the same job. Today we have government labeling, so it is a little bit easier for them, and warn them before they go into the woods not to eat anything they don't recognize. Children who have this cross are the kind of children that swallow things in the medicine cabinet.

Thus, desire comes in. Desire is a number of things, one of which is to make a commitment. It's to say yes to making a commitment. It is a blind yes with that 30 and the 29th gate opposite. Always look at the arms of crosses, as they tell you incredible stories. If you look at the hexagrams that are in opposition, they are exact mirrors of each other. They are the same thing, just split in the duality. The 30 gate says "desire," and the 29h gate says, "yes - yes to desire."

What is underneath this process is trial and error. In the experiential way, you've got to work your way through the trial and error process. Mistakes are going to be made and people will die, but this is the story of our programming. This is essential. Since this is the Cross of Contagion, the one who dies sets off a contagious influence. Everybody else says, "Don't eat that, don't touch that."

It also works the other way. In the 60s there has a new drug every other week, and it was always these types that were trying them out. Sometimes they would be gaga for seven days and everyone else would say, "Wow, they found a good one." But nobody else would touch these new drugs until these experiential people had tried with them first. Driven by their desire to meet God on the other side, they would oblige.

Certainly for us, and certainly for the era that we live in, one of the most significant of all gates is the 55th gate, the gate of Abundance. This is because it is in the 55° where the mutation is going to take place that is going to begin to transform or evolve the solar plexus into our 3° awareness center, one of spirit awareness. Thus, the 55 gate is very important. Because of its nature and the fact that it holds this mutative key, the right angle cross that it establishes is a cross with a very mystical name. Called the Right Angle Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix, it brings to mind the nature of the phoenix, which is rising up from the ashes. The analogy here refers to the nature of the solar plexus center itself, which is the great burning machine within us. The sleeping phoenix is this mutation that has been lying within the 55t gate. It's not like it just showed up, as it's been there forever. It is a mutative potential that has been sitting in the 55tn gate waiting for its moment, waiting for that moment in the program in order for it to be activated, in order for this cross to transform. This is the only cross that is actually going to be different twenty-seven years from now, and then this description will no longer apply. In other words, this cross is going to be transformed by the mutation itself

In the Right Angle Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix, you have the opposition and polarity between the Personality Sun in the 55 and Personality Earth in the 59. The 55 is the moodiest of all gates, as it is the gate where the cup is 1½ full or the cup is ½ empty. This is a gate where you wake up in the morning and the world is black, or you wake up in the morning and the world is light.

The 59th gate is the basis of our sexual intimacy as strategy. When the sleeping phoenix awakens, we are going to have a transformation in the way in which our sexuality operates. The transformation that is going to take place in the emotional system is going to be accompanied by an enormous decrease in population in this century. Despite the statistics and worldwide institutions forecasting a population explosion, if fact we are about to be devastated in terms of our population. We are certainly going to lose at least 50% of the human population of the planet.

Part of that is going to be the increasing inability for humans to be able to reproduce. This infertility is part of the mutation that is going to take place in this cross, when we get to 2027 and the mutation clicks in. This is an evolutionary process, and isn't going to happen overnight. We'll have this transition where over time everybody is going to see that it is visible. Initially it will begin to operate in newborn children, and then will be fleshed out 20 to 30 years later. As they grow into their early maturity, the transition or mutation in them will begin to take hold.

There are many, many forces at work to be able to diminish our reproductive capacity. There is already powerful and detailed evidence about the diminishment of this capacity, for example, in men's ability to produce sperm. We already know that there are infertility problems in many species. A common occurrence in the American medical landscape is couples' inability to have children. It is becoming almost epidemic. But we are naturally moving to a point where reproduction is going to be severely limited.

At the design level we still have the 34/20- this industriousness and busyness that comes with this channel of Charisma. These people say, "I know I am busy now." This is their mantra. They have been very industriousness about finding sex, romance, and love - they are deeply seeking love, and at the same time suffering because the love that they are seeking is love that cannot easily be found.

With the nature of individuality, it is better for an individual to love what they can't have, than to have what they do not love. This is the nature of how this cross operates. This is all about love and about being busy looking for love, looking for intimacy and suffering as a result because of food. You see the Sleeping Phoenix in not doing very much as a fat bird. There are all kinds of problems that are inherent to the 55th gate, when it comes to food, because this is the gate to eat or not to eat. Based on moodiness; this is a gate that eats or does not eat. This is the cross that gives us love sickness and allof this suffering that comes out of not having love. It is the joke, you see, because it is this cross that is going to kill sexual love. When the bird wakes up, it's a different movie and the strategy is going to be altered; the strategy is going to be mutated.

We're going to have a phenomenon in which fewer and fewer and fewer people are going to be fertile, and it is all going to come out of this transformation from this suffering because one cannot find love. Eventually we won't have to worry about it anymore, but this is a transition that is going to sexually take centuries for it to fulfill itself. It is going to take a long time, but that process is coming. It is in this cross that that process is alive. If you carry that as a cross now, and if you are around at the time the mutation kicks in, you are going to be highly sensitive to these young forces coming into the world around you. These are beings that are ultimately going to need to be guided. The cross itself is an uncomfortable cross to have, and it's only not going to be when the mutation arises.

As we move through the wheel, the next step is the 37th gate of the Family, with the Earth in its opposite gate, the 40. Thus, we will have the definition of the 40/37, the Channel of Community, which specifically is about the bargain. The bargain of the family flows naturally out of the previous structure. In the Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix we saw the establishment of sexual bonds and the fulfillment of sexual strategies, in order to alleviate the spirit, to find love through sexual bonding. The love that is found through sexual bonding then has to be formed completely in the bargain of the Family.

The bargain of the family is going to change, because what is a family going to look like when we have such limited fertility? We can't imagine that; we don't know what that is like. It is has never been natural to our species. If we don't pay attention to the mutative aspect that is coming, and we just look at what is sitting there, we see what naturally flows out of our need for sexuality, love and the fulfillment of the spirit. This is where the program says, "Look to the family." This indicates that only by entering into the bargain of the family can we ultimately fulfill these aspects -the sexual strategy is there in order to be able to produce children and community, because community is the strength on which human beings succeed.

In the synthesis of the Human Design System and its use of the zodiacal wheel, we not only use the Babylonian-rooted western astrology, but also eastern astrology. Using the precession of the equinox, we can see larger global themes as they impact on us. Right now the global theme that impacts on us is this Right Angle Cross of Planning. When we are through with that, we will not be in a 1 line theme, because of the clockwise movement.

This means that we are now in the 37¹, but in 2027 the global theme moves to the 559. That's the transition point. But here in this story, we are looking at it the other way around. What we are looking at here in the world that we live in, and the way in which the Earth and its consciousness operates, is its genetic code strung out. When we put all of these themes from the 192 crosses together, we have the genetic code of the totality or the parameter, structure and the pattern out of which consciousness operates on this planet.

So globally being on this Cross of Planning right now, we are focused on community and the bargain. By the way, this cross became active in 1610, so this has been the global theme since then. It's all about the energy for detail, our capacity for skills, and our search for depth - it is about building community.

Mystically the 40/37 in building its community also structures the religious practices. It is building the churches and the temples it's forming bonds that hold communities together. Since the beginning of that theme in the 17th Century, we have had the by-product and the value of this larger program at work. In other words, we have had the institutionalization of life - institutionalizing health care, the inner structure of cities, school systems, companies and organizations, and on and on and on. All of this is part of this cross. The force in all of this is to bond us together, and to bond us together in an attempt to create something greater, to organize something at a greater level.

It is something that has a tremendous amount of skill within it as a potential. But, this Cross of Planning is coming to an end. The kind of civilization that we have been living in is reaching its point of fulfillment now. By 2027 we should have all of the basic information we need to understand certain fundamentals about the universe and about our own bodies. The nature of the genetic code, the mass and age of the universe are all basic things that should be understood by then. We are here to understand what we are. This is the revelation of Human Design, that is what it is here for - to give everybody an opportunity to recognize clearly what their nature is, so they can let go and simply be in the flow of what life is.

But as we go into the next global cycle in 2027, this Cross of Planning, this vast organizing and integrating force, is going to disappear. The next global cycle is almost entirely individual, and it doesn't care about the tribe or about the bargain. Then the bargain is going to break down, because the family, in the sense that we know it, is going to break down.

This is the first time that we actually get to a gate in the head center with the Sun in the 63rd gate and the Personality Earth in the 64th gate - the collective gates of the head center, one of the pressure centers. The 63rd gate is the great gate of doubt and the great gate of suspicion. In order for society to survive, it must have reliable patterns that it can work with, know, and feel secure with. Without those reliable patterns, civilization and society break down. The 63rd gate is the gate of asking questions, and its questions are based on uncertainty and suspicion about patterns. By the time we get to this point where this kind of cross is incarnating, something new the is coming in - it's the beginning of being able to codify the patterns.

This is the link that it has with the 5th gate, which is the gate of patterns, and is the root of our cellular process, establishing whether it is a cellular pattern or a life pattern. At the same time the 35 gate in the Design Earth is the completion of the desire process indicating whether or not expectation has been fulfilled.

The 64th gate of Confusion is always looking at the past, and is the beginning of the stimulation of the mental process. Here in the beginning is where the mind attempts to begin to claim authority. It simply does. The moment that you step into a maya that is constructed by mind, that only at a point where you are deep, deep, deep, deep in your education are you ever going to be able to see that mind has no authority. For the vast history of humanity, mind has been the only thing that ever had any kind of authority.

So this is the beginning of the mental plane being the place where everybody is looking to see if everything is working. It is not about the physical, sexual stuff anymore. It is not about the basics like food - these basic things are already in the program. But this is saying, "Look we've got to go above this. There is something else to explore. Why are we here? What are we here for?" This is what the Right Angle Cross of Consciousness brings.

These are question askers. As a right angle cross, it has four variations. It is very different when we move from this Quarter of Initiation with the Personality Sun in the 63d gate, with its focus on the question, and when the Sun moves into the other gates of the cross. Those themes will change dependent upon that positioning. But here in this first variation, this is the beginning of trying to organize the world mentally, and it isn't about awareness, it is about pressure. We are under enormous pressure to mentally work things out. You can take all of the Babas and gurus that tell you "no mind," and it is all very nice. But you know there is no "no mind" until you figure out what mind is, deal with it, and answer those things that must be answered within you. If you don't get the answer inside of you, because if there is any major question within you that you've never articulated, it's because there is a part of you that just isn't correct here now. It is always there; that is what consciousness is all about. There is this incredible pressure that says, "Why? Why? Why?" This is the why. One of Ra's nicknames for Earth is the "why" planet, which he thinks is a nice pun.

When the Sun moves out of the 63, you're going to come into a different kind of structure with the Sun in the 22, the gate of Grace. Back in the individual process with the 22 being the gate of attentiveness. This is a place where the individual is ready to listen, and there is a potential for mutation. There is openness to art, music, and breathing correctly is very important to these beings. This is the Right Angle Cross of Rulership, and notice that usurpation came before rulership. They are different, as the usurper has no right, after all, and is just grabbing. They are designed to make the grab. But here in the Right Angle Cross of Rulership, Grace comes in. These are natural rulers. and in their life they will be offered rulership, rather than being usurpers who have to claim that rulership. The usurper is left angle and transpersonal, but the ruler isn't. The ruler is right angle - if he makes bad rules he pays for the karma later. Remember the right angle is making karma, creating what they are going to have to deal with in their future.

In the first version of the cross, that is the Foundation Cross of Introspection, the Personality Earth is in the 47. The 47th gate, the gate of Oppression, is a very difficult gate. It's all about trying to deal with the pressure from the past and trying to resolve that, trying to find some clarity, and to make some sense out of the past. The first line is all about Ambition; it's all about being busy. This is where the cliché about "busy fingers" and you don't have to worry about your mind anymore. If these beings are busy with ruling, they are very grounded and healthy people, as they come into the world to rule. Think about having a baby come into your life who is on the Cross of Rulership - they are going to rule your life; they just are going to rule your life, and there isn't anything you can do about it. It can be described in many ways, because you don't have to describe it as rulership, but you know they are going to rule your life. These people come in and are here to rule.

What is very important about them is that they will listen - that is their greatest gift as a ruler. All of this rulership is stemming from the 45th gate whose nature is to be the pasha. It is the gate of the king or queen; this is the natural ruler of the tribe and natural controller of territory. With the 45th gate in your profile, you are always going to be offered territory and offered a form of rulership.

The 45th gate has an obligation to educate. Remember a few steps back, where we were dealing with the program and our need to be conscious enough to see the value of mind. The best rulers are the ones who educate their people the best. This is something that is so obvious and something that is very, very important to understand. In other words, by the time you get over thinking that only the physical body is going to supply you with your needs, you know you killed the next whatever or the case may be. You have to get to a point that there is another way - where you go beyond the physical and get into the educational, that you begin to educate. It is the greatest responsibility of rulership to be a good educator.

With the Personality Sun in the 22nd gate, these are rulers that listen, and because they listen they have a tendency to be more open to doing the work necessary to educate those they rule. Ruling without educating, ultimately leads to destruction, as eventually you are going to have rebellion and revolution. It can't be avoided. A true ruler's greatest responsibility is to educate those that they rule.

We are moving from the 22nd gate to the 36th gate, the last gate in Pisces. It is the Darkening of the Light, the gate of crisis, and the gate of penetration. It is a deep gate of desire, of inexperience looking for experience. So you are dealing with a very, very powerful experiential gate.

The polarity of the 36 is the 6th gate, which is really responsible for whether or not we are going to be open or closed to others. It is the diaphragm that opens us up to intimacy. In being related to the pH chemically in our body, the 6th gate is a deeply complex gate. Out of the 6 gate, all of the possible waves of the emotional system are generated. Thus, whether we are dealing with the needs of the tribe, or the passion of the individual, or the desire of the abstract collective, all of them have their root in the 6th gate and its complexity.

The 36/6 as a polarity means that all intimacy for us, whether we are going to be open to intimacy or not, is always being conditioned by whether it is going to be an exciting experience or not. That need for excitement in intimacy is at the root of this cross, the Right Angle Cross of Eden. If it is not going to be exciting, then it is not going to be fun.

But we all know the story - you get thrown out of Eden. So come in on this cross and you get thrown. In other words, you have to go deeр into the world. Going deep into the world you'll see this fulfillment when we get to the end of this progression in this 36 hexagram, because we'll get to the Left Angle Cross of the Plane. An example of what we are dealing with here in the Right Angle Cross of Eden is somebody on this cross who is born into a wealthy family, and has all kinds of privileges. Six months later there is an accident, there is a death, there is a bankruptcy, there is something, and all of sudden Eden is lost.

In Eden being lost, she has to go out into the world, find her knowledge, and her own way. Therefore, people who come in on this cross can often have an unexpected and often tragic beginning. In other words, certain protections, certain securities, certain whatever can be taken away from them. This can also be at the psychological level - it is a very common cross for people who have their ideals shattered at a very early age. You know the Eden is gone; the beauty, simplicity, and innocence are lost. This is a cross of the loss of innocence.

Thrown from Eden and told to "go forth and multiply." Okay, I'm not innocent anymore, let's multiply because that is what it leads to. One is really entering into the world; and as you move from the 22 to the 36, you lose your Grace. It's the joke, but it is true. Leaving Grace behind; you are ushered into the sexual maelstrom. First you enter into all of that by entering into the Cross of Eden, and then out you go. You go out because it turns you on, after all. Sex means everything to the people who come in on this cross. Sex is very, very important to them. After all, it is the only thing they can take with them when they leave Eden. Taking their sex with them, they try to re-find their paradise through that sexuality. Of course, that leads to a great deal of dilemmas.

However, in all of this there is really magic. This is a very complex cross. In the middle of the right angle structure are both the Changing Cross of Introspection (the 1/4) and the Foundation Cross of Projection (the 2/4), because the Design Sun/Earth are in the 11 and 124. These are one of the most important polarities we have. The 124, the line of The Prophet, is the ability to be able to raise the stagnant or it's the voice in wilderness. As a great gate of articulation, it has the ability to mutate others, and through mutating others to actually truly be a prophet for the whole. The 11 is the great gate of teaching, for example, Einstein was an 114. The 11 is the gate of Ideas, and its 4th line, the line of the Teacher, is a very complex line having three different planetary activations, and giving us three different kinds of teachers, ranging from the Teacher to the Sage to the Guru.

An exploration of sexual intimacy and all of its possibilities is part of this cross. It is also contains a way to teach it, and a way to expand it. After all, up until you get to the 36 gate, sex has looked a lot like dogs in a field. By the time the Sun is in the 36th gate, we have the ability to begin writing the Kama Sutra. This is a different kind of exploration here and with it the ability to turn sexuality into something greater - to create tantric philosophy and all of these things that can try to elevate sexuality into something higher. All of this has its beginnings in this Right Angle Cross of Eden.

With the second grouping of eight hexagrams in the first quarter of Initiation, we come to the 25th hexagram, the hexagram of Innocence, part of the Vessel of Love. Remember how this works in every single quarter - we begin with а Cross of the Sphinx, in the middle is the Vessel of Love. and at the end the Cross of the Four Ways. Each quarter is structured this same way - however, there are different variations of the right and left angle crosses.

This is the first variation of the Right Angle Cross of the Vessel of Love. The image of the Vessel of Love is that of a container that is made up of the four gates of love: The 15th gate, the love of humanity and the aura itself, is the outside of the container. The 46 gate, the love of the body, creates the actual form of the container itself, that is the inside structure of it. The 10th gate, the gate of Behavior, is the lip of the vessel. Everything would pour out of the 10th gate, and what you are going to pour is the 25, the blood; it is universal love.

The 25th gate has an extraordinary aspect to it. In looking at the design of forms, all inanimate objects have simply one gate out of one center. Remember, to be alive there must be a channel. There is no channel in the inanimate. Yet every single inanimate object has its basic format, its basic matrix - a G center with an open 25h gate. This universal love is the coolest of love.

In the old days, those that came in on the Vessel of Love with their Sun in Innocence would have been seen as priests and priestesses. They are the ones that take us into cosmic love, into the larger love. Yet, at a personal level they have difficulty, as this is the coolest love. This is a love that says, "I love this machine, as much as my child." Obviously this can be quite annoying to some people. "Yes, I do love my guitar more than you." Universal love is like that, as it has nothing to do with hot love; it is simply very cool. It takes in everything.

For anyone on the Cross of the Vessel, because all four arms always have to do with love, love is the biggest question in their life - to be loved, to know love. But even with all four gates of the Cross of the Vessel activated, it doesn't mean that one has a defined G center. You can have those that desperately seek love, but are always being conditioned by other forces. The children that come in on this cross must be fully embraced, because love is what is going to matter to them. If you are looking for a kind of nice smiley cross, this one is it.

The Cross of the Vessel of Love is the only way to balance the Sphinx. The Sphinx is hard. The road is hard and relative perception leads to all kinds of problems. Love is its balance. Remember something about the nature of the love that is coming out of the G center - it is not sexual. It has nothing to do with sex, which makes it a different kind of love entirely, so here in the G, a different kind of love is possible. These are very important forces. They balance us in the world between the pressure that it takes to move through life, to try to survive, to try to go through what the program has shown us up to now - very basic stuff: to be ready to defend ourselves, to be ready to kill to feed ourselves, to find communion, to be taken over by our needs for sexuality and our needs for food and pleasure.

One of the things that you will notice in these first eight hexagrams is that so much of it is in the emotional system. It all starts with the emotional system, and that is why it is going to close with the emotional system finally waking up. We begin with the need for food, sex, pleasure, and all of those things that are there in the emotional system. But, here you come back to the G center, and you come back to purity. You come back to innocence in that sense.

These beings, with their Personality Sun in the 25 gate, come into love - but they are often shocked and broken in love. This is because their whole dynamic is going to be pointing towards what they don't have - the 51st gate, which is the harmonic to the Sun in the 25. Thus, they are going to meet shock in their process, and in meeting that shock, they can feel totally lost. They can feel that they can never have love, that they can never hold on to love, that love is always taken away from them.

With the 17th gate, the gate of opinions, we go into the Ajna center and the logical side of mind. As a sidebar this is where genetically we begin to wonder about time, and is the beginning of trying to grasp time. This all begins with the realization in the 25th gate that we are terminal, and are going to die. That realization makes us want to live longer, and that focus on trying to last longer gets us caught up in the whole time business. Then the 17 comes.

The 17 is here to organize us. We've gone from the Cross of Healing, a left-angle transpersonal cross, into the Right Angle Cross of Service, which is most logical cross, as all four gates are logical. This is not about service in the sense that these beings are not necessarily humanitarians. After all, they have no choice. Being right angle and self-absorbed, she feels good doing her work. But that doesn't mean that the feel good comes from providing the service. She just feels good from what she does. The fact that somebody else may benefit from that may be wonderful and valuable, but that is not where she gets her satisfaction.

This is also about correction, and this is the first great cross of bitching. People who come in on this cross will bitch incessantly, because of course they want to be of service. "Let me tell you what's wrong - with you, with your life, with the world, with just about everything." The definition between the 18/58 is here in this right angle cross, and those who come in on this cross are deeply dissatisfied. They bring dissatisfaction and that dissatisfaction leads to service.

The 17th gate is the way mentally we begin to organize ourselves, and is the root of what we ultimately will call philosophy. Out of the 17th gate we establish opinions and begin the conceptual process of trying to organize humanity. The 17th gate is always seeking out detail, and this seeking out of detail naturally follows the discovery of how fragile we are in this life, that we do need protection, and that we are going to need healing in this life. The detail is going to be important, as is the investigation of things. As the Cross of Service, it looks like this is very, very productive. Obviously it can be. However, again you have to see that generally it is the not-self that is carrying this cross. So what you are going to have is a lot of dissatisfaction, and a deep sense that the world is not right.

Somebody that has a defined splenic center is not going to be the ideal healer. It is very important to grasp that. In looking at a cross that has a defined splenic center, such as the Cross of Service, these people are not healers. But, they can be of service, point you in the right direction, organize the environment, so perhaps healing can be possible. But at the mundane level, this is a great whining cross - nothing is right and nothing is working.

Now we get down to serious business with the Right Angle Cross of Tension. The Sun moves into the 21st gate and everybody starts goosestepping with Biting Through, the gate of control, the gate of needing to be in control, the gate of the Hunter and the Huntress, the president, and the leader of the tribe. Vanity gets in the way of our acceptance of hierarchy. Right from the beginning, right from the moment we are born, you can see from the Cross of Dominion that usurpation is part of our process. There is a deep drive within humanity to compete for hierarchical levels; in other words, the rising up and however everyone wants to look at that rising up. There is always some kind of resistance to hierarchies.

This Cross of Tension simply comes with the baggage of being a natural leader, and that baggage is that in order to maintain one's authority one must be on guard and have control. Without that control, usurpation is always possible. Without that control the tribe may not operate properly, and if the tribe doesn't function properly, it is the leader who has to take the blame. The pressure to be the ruler, to be the leader, is where this tension is rooted.

The opposite of the 21st gate is the 48th gate, the gate of Depth, which means that the real capacity to be able to be the leader of the tribе is rooted in the need for depth. It is also cute to notice that the 48th gate is the gate of black magic. It's nice to have your tricks, your backdoor politics, your slush funds, your bullies in the back room, etc., whatever the case may be.

The difficult aspect for those who come in on this cross is that they feel the tension in their bodies. Thus, these are people that need to have their bodies worked on and worked on a lot. Regular massage is essential, as these are beings that need to work on their bodies - because this tension, which is a field of energy out of their cross, permeates their body.

The way in which they release tension is by provoking - that is how they get their tension out and pass it on to somebody else. Of course, when that is right angle that's not so nice. After all, they are getting it out to help themselves - putting that tension out into the other. If you take the moral high road, you can say that's terrible, and not terribly nice. But the other side of that is that the Cross of Tension is necessary, because without that tension there is no way to maintain authority over the tribe. The tribe needs to have that sense that if they don't do something right, somebody is going to punish them.

With the arrival of the 21st gate, the first thing you get is the police, because there is the recognition that there has to be control and enforcement of control. So that provocation and tension leads to enforcement that says, "I'm in control. Do as I say. Do as you are suppose to do, and so on." It is interesting the way that things work, as it is built into our program - wherever you look on this planet there are these creatures in uniform that carry weapons. It doesn't matter where you look; they are all over the place. It's not like we necessarily wanted that; it is built into us genetically - that role is there. There is always somebody standing there keeping us all in line. We're genes on a chromosome standing there in line, and so we have to have our police force.

The 51st gate, the Arousing, shock, thunder, is the bookend to the 25th gate. The 51st gate is an ego gate, and its biological relationship is to the gall bladder - this is where gall is. With the Right Angle Cross of Penetration that is exactly what they do - they penetrate you. That is what they are here for, and they penetrate you in many, many different ways. They can shock you as they penetrate you through the depth of their intuition. Another way they penetrate you is by getting you to notice them. They can also penetrate things by opening up what is new, and by starting things.

This is a very dynamic force, this Right Angle Cross of Penetration. The 51st gate is a classic Arian gate. So, we are dealing with very rudimentary beginnings but very deep penetration. Whenever there is individuality in a cross, that cross is mutative, and the people carrying that cross represent mutative agents. Therefore, the Cross of Penetration is a mutative cross. That shock that they inadvertently bring to somebody, remember that they are right angle, may be enormously valuable to that person. However, that wasn't the intent of the right angle as they are absorbed in their own process.

The 42nd hexagram brings us to the place where the beginning and end themes become active. As a gate of completion, the 42nd gate is a gate of growth. In this context, it is really about the closing of one cycle (all of the gates that we have seen coming up to this point) and this is where we begin the preparation for what we will eventually get to in the next few hexagrams. At that point we'll enter the next quarter, the Quarter of Civilization.

The Right Angle Cross of Maya is absolutely essential in our development. In order for us to be fulfilled and to complete our process, we all must be masters of the maya. This is the environment, in that sense, that we live in. We all master the maya by simply coming to grips with our own nature. Out of the acceptance of our own inner authority and our own process through type, we get to see the way in which the maya operates. It doesn't mean that you get to study all the nuances of it. It simply means that the moment that you are surrendered is the moment you get to see how the mechanics actually operate around you.

When we are dealing with this cross, remember that right angle crosses have four variations depending upon where the Personality Sun is. Here with the Personality Sun in the 42, it is very important for us to see closure in things - not just simply having open-end perspectives. Out of this comes what we could eventually call science. In other words, rooted here in the 42 is the need for the complete conclusion to things. In other words, how does that actually work? What is the beginning? What is the middle? What is the end? How is that process?

There is an inherent difficulty in the 42nd gate, as it is designed to finish things. Being part of the cyclical format process, and designed to complete things, if it enters into something incorrectly, it can linger for a long time. For example, the 42 falls in love and gets married, only to discover a week late that they don't likе their partner. It could take them 30 years to get divorced - that's the 42. With the Sun in the 42, it's all about getting into things that one can really come to closure with - this means that one must enter them correctly. If you don't, the maya just becomes confusion, and you end up in situations where obviously you live out a life that is not for you. You end up doing things that are not for you, and being unfulfilled in that process, and most importantly finding it very, very difficult to get out.

For example, children who are carrying the 42nd gate (wherever it is in their cross), it is so important that they enter into things, such as where their studies may lead them, according to their type. Otherwise, they are never going to achieve fulfillment out of that, nor are they going to fulfill their work in the maya.

Detail is the grounding of this cross. With the Design Earth in the 62, these forces are here to collect all the detail, since we need to understand how all of these things work. Otherwise, we can never get rid of the power of the mental plane. Remember that you don't defeat the mind through lobotomy. It doesn't work that way. You defeat it by coming to grips with what it is exactly, by understanding yourself and the world around you. That is something that is no longer held back from you, as you can know that now, just by living out your type. Living out your type is all you need in order to find your place in the whole and be at peace with yourself.

The Personality Earth remains in the 32 for these three crosses, and the 32 brings the fear of failure. The other side of making the right commitment is the fear of failure. If you don't make the right commitment, failure is going to haunt you. These are people that are haunted by that. When somebody who comes in on the Right Angle Cross of Maya is given a crossword puzzle, and if she doesn't get all of it, she's pissed. She feels terrible, as she didn't get to complete it. Of course the moment that they don't get to complete it, they feel like a failure themselves. The whole business about failure is about evaluation or valuation. It is about the material world.

The next step in our journey is the 3rd gate. When we make this transition, we have the Right Angle Cross of Laws, and this is the first preparation for what will eventually be a civilizing design. Those who come in on this cross bring the law, rules, commandments, and tenets. Each of the gates of the Cross of Laws has their capacity to create rules, law and order.

With the 3/60 defined, the Channel of Mutation, we have one of the most power definitions in a cross configuration. This is a deeply mutative cross, and can also be very depressive. The 3/60, the individual mutative format, brings the deepest of melancholic chemistry. Thus, deep depression is always a potential with the Cross of the Laws. It also means given that this is the format energy for the creative process, that the law itself and the creation of rules are in essence a kind of art. Through the 3/60, we have the mutative laws - laws that bring major dynamic changes in the way in which we deal with each other and the societies that we are a part of. But with the 60th gate remaining, limitation is inherent in the law and the rules.

A child on this cross without any rules is going to be very disturbed. They expect them, need them, and deep, deep, deep down inside know this. There is no way in which all of us can operate in our vast collective tribal relationships without rules and order. So these four variations of the Cross of Laws are the ones through each quarter who always are going to establish the necessity for law. In this Quarter of Initiation, the Right Angle Cross of Laws is in the 3 gate and is all about the fulfillment of mutation - that is why the 3 gate is Difficulty at the Beginning, because it is a fulfillment of mutation. Something new has to come out, and this is where we have the establishment of the first laws.

The Personality Earth is in the 50th gate, grounding the 3rd gate through the tribal lawgiver. With this gate of values, they establish the laws that are essential for the tribe itself, in order to preserve the tribe and protect the young. In this cross we have the very beginnings of the rules and laws that we are here to live by.

By the way, the reason that the 56t gate is so deeply embedded in the process of the law is because of its harmonic. It is out of the 11th gate that all idealism originates, for example the idealism of Marxism, since Marx had the 11th gate. Or we get a law about the nature of light and its movement from someone like Einstein, who has the 11th gate, and it becomes a law that we establish, expressing it through the 56. This is how the 56 operates in bringing laws.

We've seen that the Cross of Laws is there to be able to establish a common ground in which everybody can live together, in which human beings can be protected. That is the essence of the 50th gate, and which sees that the tribe is more important than anything else and must be protected. Here we come to the 27th gate, which is the harmonic to the 50 -forming the channel of Preservation, part of the defense circuit. It is through this channel of Preservation that we have the relationship between law and nurturing. In other words, one of the things to understand about the fulfillment of law is that a law is only a good law, a rule is only a good rule, if it is nurturing by having it in place, and at its source is actually caring about the whole.

Now tribally that sometimes is going to look a lot more lenient, than it would for example collectively. The tribe will put up with a lot more, as long as its basic code is not broken. It's not the nitpicking laws that you get in the collective, which is a very different kind of thing. When you come into the 27, you come into the oddest of the right angle crosses. You come to the Right Angle Cross of the Unexpected, and that is exactly what these people are. There is always something totally unexpected about them that either emerges out of getting to know them or just suddenly is there.

But it is more than that. Their lives are marked by the unexpected, and for them the uncertainty of life is what they bring into the world. In essence they bring chaos theory - they bring into the world that sense that you can't predict this or that or whatever. Now of course it is a joke, because those that bring chaos are designed to do so. Remember the joke, it looks like that in the maya, because that is what it is suppose to look like in the maya. But it is not out of a chaotic source at all.

One of the most important things that these beings do for us is to remind us, "That yes, it's very nice that you have a law, but you can have an unexpected situation in which you have to care more about the being than honoring the law." This is the mother/father; this is the nurturing that says, "No, you cannot take my child and put him in jail for smoking a joint. Yon cannot do that; that's not right." So there is this nurturing aspect on the other side that is saying, "Wait a minute, wait a minute, what about the unexpected, what about this, what about that."

But it's even more than that. Years ago in Germany, Ra was doing some research on the time of discovery of various planets. For example, when exactly did Hershel discover Uranus in 1781? The discovery of Pluto, Neptune, and Uranus - each of those three discoveries happened while the Sun was in the Cross of the Unexpected. Furthermore, when Schumacher-Levy, this incredible comet, smacked Jupiter; it happened on the Cross of the Unexpected. So there is something very unique in the way in which this cross works, because you can see it at the macrocosmic level.

It really does bring surprise, if you will, and can bring the unexpected, both in the positive and in the negative. If you come in on this right angle cross, you will have to deal with the unexpected in your personal life. There is no way to escape that, as it is always going to pop up in your life. Thus, there can be those moments where radical change is something that can happen.

The four arms of the Right Angle Cross of the Four Ways are the four ways - Return, the 24, Coming to Meet, the 44, Approach, the 19, and Retreat, the 33. Each quarter has a way, and this Quarter of Initiation's way is the Return. The mental dimension of this quarter is established here by its way, that is with the 24th gate in the Ajna center. It is the individual gate of rationalizing, and it is a very, very loud noisy acoustic mental gate. Concepts are going over and over and over and over and over again.

This tells us something about the beginning of the maya process and the mental process - there was going to be incredible drudgery in all of that, going over and over and over and over again, the same things over and over and over again. Ra recently was in New York and a young friend with a tape recorder asked Ra some questions that he was using in his thesis. They were the same old bloody questions: What's God? Where's God? Who's God? Ra doesn't care. It is the same old stuff. So when you come here to this Return, you can see exactly what we were put into - to go over and over again until it drives you crazy. How many people for how long have been talking about the same things over and over again, and they don't know anything about them. It's been going on for thousands of years. They just don't know - they don't who they are, what they are really talking about, or how it really works - they're just making it all up. For thousands of years we've had people that are nodding their heads, and we go over it again and again. We keep on going over it, because it doesn't work. But, nobody clicks to that. Nobody says, "Well excuse me. We've been going over that same ground forever." That is the way that we were setup.

The program knows that we come in and out. After all, we're just meat. Well it's true - that's why it's call 'in carne' - into the meat. It means incarnate. We're meat, and we come in and out. They grow us. It's true. We grow here on the planet don't we? You see it takes time. Remember something, just by looking at Neptune and Pluto, you have to understand that no single life completes a cycle. No single life completes a cycle - it just doesn't - that's why we end up dying and going, "Jesus what was that all about?" Because no single life completes a cycle; we just come in and out - it is the program; it is the totality.

So this whole business, of going over and over and over it, is that you have to go over and over and over. Going through generation after generation after generation, and then finally, hopefully, mutation comes along and there is this "Ah - gee that's simple, why did we spend a thousand years trying to figure that out." It's true. It's like Human Design: "Gee, that's simple. Why did we spend so much time trying to figure it out?" Because we were designed to go through all that nonsense, as consciousness and form are evolving together - it is quite a process. So this Quarter of Initiation, this mental plane for us, is the big headache.

Over and over and over and over again - what it means to come to grips with the mental plane, which is the original conditioning that is in all of us? This is the genetic code of the whole; we all carry it. It traps us then in a maya in which we can never, ever, ever have satisfaction. If you don't get the mind game, if you cannot come to grips with mind, and there is only one way. It is not about learning. One must stop giving one's mind inner authority. It is the biggest step you can take in your life.

The moment that you have Human Design as a tool, you can identify where the true authority is within yourself, that reliable authority that you need. But the moment that you truly rely on that authority, regardless of what your mind's trip is, the mind has lost its power. It has lost its power to guide us, which is good as it is not here to guide us. It is here to observe and to be a medium for sharing what we observe together. But it is not here to guide us. Until you get that straight and until you can live out what is your true authority, this 24 gate is going to hammer you to death.

Because that is what it does. Ask anybody that has the 24 in her design. It doesn't let go of you; it won't let go. It will keep on asking you the same question about your life over and over and over and over, and if your mind can't answer it, there is no peace. So if you give your mind inner authority, you are going to suffer that and that is the whole curse of the 24. The curse of the 24 is that mind does have inner authority- that is where it all comes from. It had to be there in the beginning and it's not like it's bad. It's just time to get past it. There is another awareness coming.

We were forced to be deeply involved in the mental plane, deeply, going over these concepts endlessly. But remember we are coming to the end. In coming to the end as we've seen in the advent of our technology and the vastness of our knowledge, we're beginning to grasp the maya in a detail that was impossible to imagine - we're getting there. At the moment that we can really get to that point where human beings on this planet know where their authority is within them and that mind is no longer guiding the game, then you have this vast transition that can take place. So here in the 24, in the Right Angle Cross of the Ways when we are dealing with the Sun in the 24t gate for this quarter - here we can see that this is the way of mind. This is the way of trying to resolve the mental plane; trying to grasp it; trying to know it - the deep influence there or the punctuation there on the knowing.

Entering into a new realm, and we left behind the 24th gate, the Return, part of the Cross of the Four Ways. Now we enter into the 2nd gate, the gate of the driver, the direction for the three perspectives of the gates of the Sphinx. Remember, we started with the 13th gate in Aquarius, and now we are stepping into the second quarter meeting the second variation of the same cross. In other words, we have here the Cross of the Sphinx, but with the Sun in the 2nd gate rather than the 13.

Looking at the chop of the 2nd hexagram, you see that the first two lines are yin/yin. If you look at the fifteen hexagrams that follow in this quarter, you will see that their first two lines are also yin/yin - that is what links these hexagrams together. Those sixteen hexagrams are also broken up into two groups of eight - this is something that we'll see repeat as we go through each quarter. In the first group of eight, from the 2nd to the 12th hexagram, the first three lines are all yin. So for eight hexagrams in a row there is a base of three yin lines. When you get to the next group of 8, from the 15th to the 33 hexagram, only the first two yin lines remain, and the third line becomes a yang line.

This is the Realm of Duhbe, the Quarter of Civilization, and it begins with a Sphinx gate. As always it is going to have a Vessel of Love in the middle, and then is going to close (in this case the 33d gate of Retreat) with a gate from the Cross of the Four Ways. Again, this is the structure that is built into these quarters.

Looking at the throat center, you'll see that every single one of its eleven gates is activated through this whole field of civilization. Thus, if we were to give this quarter another name, we could call it the quarter of manifestation. This is all about getting things done, building things, and making things. It also has obviously a verbal aspect to it, an acoustic aspect to it, in terms of being able to articulate and express in so many different ways. But the real basis of this Quarter of Civilization is the pressure on us to manifest - the pressure on us to manifest through the Holy Grail of our design, which is the throat. Everything is about the throat, as the throat is where the fetus in its first design form begins. The throat is the whole story, as it is only here with the throat, with manifestation, that we can begin to move away from being clever beasts.

It begins with the 2nd gate, The Receptive. Of all of the gates, this one is the most fascinating at a very basic level. It is the place of the driver, and where the Magnetic Monopole is located. It is the place that gives us our illusion of separateness, our connection to our geometry, and our movement in space. When you are looking at the 2nd gate, what you are looking at is the one way in which we are all given direction. We know that through the Sphinx that this direction can be expressed through its perspectives - that is the abstract perspective, the 13 looking backward; the logical perspective of the 7 looking forward; and the individual that is there simply in the moment. But all of them are being fueled and directed by the 2n gate.

So with the second variation of the Right Angle Cross of the Sphinx, you are getting to the real theme of the entire direction of humanity, because that is what the 2nd gate always represents. Design brings moments of sheer delight, and one of these is the nature of our basic direction, because this primary cross of direction has the Sun in 2', which is all about beauty. It is about a direction of beauty, whether it is there naturally or whether you have to work hard to get it. It is one of the most beautiful things to understand about our evolution and our direction is that we are always moving towards what is beautiful.

Sphinxes give direction, but think about the difference here. If you meet somebody with their Sun in the 13t gate, and you're standing with him at the super market checkout - what you are going to end up being focused on afterwards is the past, because that is the direction he brings you. But when you meet somebody who has this second variation of the Sphinx, they open up everything for you. That is the beauty of this cross. They open up all the possibilities of direction. With the Sun in the 2nd gate, they are much more open to all these possibilities and are much more open to the many ways of describing things and of seeing things.

Sometimes when you talk to them, they can be a little bit confusing. One of their difficulties is that although they know the direction, it is hard for them to really describe it. They can sort of point to something in the future or point back to something in the past or try to ... all they know is the direction. So you ask them, "What should you do?" "Well," they say, "go that way." But they can't help you with anything other than "go that way." Everything else becomes confusing. But, they are very, very important forces.

Because we are opening up a new realm here, one of the things to understand is that it is up to us to create the beauty. We have to make our world, and if we make our world ugly, it's our fault. If we make our world beautiful, aren't we terrific? But it is our responsibility to do something about it. You could sort of say that this is the genetic code for garbage men, you know. Clean up the mess.

Now when we looked at the first Right Angle Cross of Explanation, we had the Personality Sun in the 49 gate, so it was rooted in revolution and violence. This is where we saw the need for our capacity to be able to kill and sacrifice, and its relation to religion. But here we have a different thematic because this Cross of Explanation is operating through the Personality Sun in the 23rd gate. The 23/43 is one of the three definitions that are created by oppositions in the wheel. With a fixed mind connected to the throat, this is truly where the Cross of Explanation takes on its purest nature. The 23rd gate is the gate of Assimilation and is all about explaining oneself. This is an essential ingredient, as they never stop explaining themselves.

There is a joke about individuality. Collective awareness includes all the things that are established, that we are familiar with, and already accept. But the moment that you have individuality, you have concepts, expressions, and whatever that are going to be new, that are mutative. Now the first time that you hear them, they can sound very bizarre. They just can, because the first time an individual tries to explain her knowing to you, it can come out sounding very bizarre. However, the individual has a kind of mechanism in them that forces them to repeat that. She'll keep on telling you the same bizarre thing over and over again. After a while it becomes familiar. This is like Ra telling us that there are personality crystals. Now the first time that he said that to somebody, they thought, "Boy, this guy is bizarre. What is he talking about?" But enough people keep on saying, "personality crystals, personality crystals, personality crystals." This is the way that mutation works, as you don't necessarily mutate somebody the first time.

It's like getting into a fight when you are a kid. You think hitting them once is going to solve it all, but, boy it doesn't work that way. Mutation is not like that. Oh yes, there are mutations that just go bang, but other mutations are just based on this repetition; until it becomes less and less and less alien to the collective mind. "Oh, I heard that before." In the moment that he can say, "Oh I heard that before," you eliminate most of the resistance. When you meet this Right Angle Cross of Explanation, this is somebody who is going to perfect that repetition right in your face. They are going to keep on insisting, persisting with what their knowing is in the hopes that if you hear it enough, you'll get it.

Adults in foreign places, particularly North Americans, are in some situation trying to get their message across to somebody, and their voice starts getting louder. It gets louder and louder. This is a real individual trait. You say something and it is bizarre, so you say it again and a little louder. This is all about trying to get the mutation inside of somebody. So forgive these people, because they will keep on saying it until you are familiar with it. Then you can say, "Yeah, yeah, I heard that before." It is very difficult to be a freak. Those that carry individuality know that no matter what they do, they are always an outsider no matter how mutative they can be, or potentially integrative, in fact they are always on the outside, and will always remain on the outside.

As we move to the 8th gate, we get the need for contribution. The nature of civilization's evolution is not simply a matter of being able to coordination the efforts of humanity or society, but it is also about having a place for mutation, so that the structure of civilization evolves within itself. The moment that you bring in the individuality here, the 8/14, it is very important to see that this Right Angle Cross of Contagion is all about the need to make a contribution - to be able to make a contribution that's going to bring security and wealth.

Now contribution is about being an example and taking individual responsibility - that is very, very different than the collective, tribal responsibilities or the direction towards bringing the tribe together that we saw in the first quarter. This is something different here - this is about being an example, because it is examples that can get others to make commitments. Also if you are living in a communal environment, only the individual is going to be ready to take the risk to enter into something different, make a contribution in a different way, which may then lead to the rest of the community accepting that and adding that to whatever is involved in that process - whether it is a change in architecture or a change in the way in which society is structured.

As the Cross of Contagion, it never leaves behind the desire or the expectation that desire brings. At the very beginning of this cross is the 141, which is the line that Money isn't Everything. This is an example and dedication of resources, like the kind of pioneer spirit where a community would get together and dedicate their time to build someone's barn for them. But somebody has to be the example, has to set that off, and go out and do that. What takes place out of the Cross of Contagion is always there to impact on others. It is always there to deeply influence others, because it can. It is contagious, after all. So this individual contribution as an example becomes something that is very important, and also is а civilizing step. If everybody could be an example, then less force is necessary to keep everyone constrained to the rules.

Now we come to the second variation of the Right Angle Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix with the Sun in the 20th gate of Contemplation and the only existential gate. With the Earth in the 34th gate, we have the definition of the channel of Charisma, and a direct connection of the sacral center to the throat. One of the basic formats or basic structures of being human is that of being a manifesting generator. The vast majority of all couples are manifesting generators, and here with this common definition from this opposition, you have this primary manifesting generator.

The 20/34 says, "I know I am busy now." That's all - this cross is about being busy and getting things done. This is a real shift from the first quarter when we had the Personality Sun in the 55 gate - that whole cross was operating out of the moods and whether the right spirit was going to be there or not. This is very different. In this variation of the Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix, being busy is a way of being asleep. They are just busy and don't know why they're busy, but they are just busy. They know that they have to be busy, and there is nothing for them to do, but be busy. Until that mutation takes place in the 55h gate, they won't stop being busy.

They are going to run around and may get busy with sexuality or being depressed, because not only are three of the four gates individual, but there is individual definition in the integration channels to the throat. Thus, you are dealing with a very, very powerful melancholic field. These are people who are busy being happy or busy being sad, but they are totally absorbed in that. This is a deeply superficial incarnation, and there is no morality attached to that. In other words, this is exactly what that ride is about. This cross isn't going to function properly until the mutation takes place and clicks in. Until then, there is so much going on within the context of that cross; those that carry it are totally unaware of. This is the most extreme version of that. By the way, you can take that one step further, because the moment that you move into the juxtaposition, this is the most existential cross of all.

Now we get down to business as with the 16th gate, we come to Enthusiasm - read enthusiasm as identification. After all, this is the great gate of identification. Without identification there is no way in which correction can take place, and there is no way in which experimentation can be actualized. It is out of the 16th gate that real progress for humanity, in the logical sense, gets to manifest. Here in this Right Angle Cross of Planning, we have the beginnings of what we are living out today in this final global cycle. With the Sun in the 16, talent is everything. They are looking for talent in solutions, and there is a deep capacity to be able to focus on talented solutions that can serve the tribe. Since we still have a strong definition here of the 40/37, there is always going to be this bargain.

Out of the 16th gate we get our technologies. It is out of the 16tn gate that we get the ability to, not design a building, but to be able to build itto be able to find the pattern, and to be able to find the correct way of doing things. Again one of the keys in looking at crosses and how to grasp them is that wherever you see the Personality, look at the harmonic. The harmonic of the 16 is going to be the 48 gate, so this cross' main focus in life is depth. Always looking for depth, solutions, and ways in which correction can be established. It is looking for things to experiment with in order to benefit the community as a whole.

On this cross, it is not so easy to get that opportunity, and that is one of the ironies. Logic has a real problem; it has an energy problem. None of the three logical gates in the throat gets directly to a motor - none of them. Yet, the abstract gates go to a motor, the individual gates go to a motor, the tribal gate goes to a motor. But if you are looking at logic, at the 62nd gate, the 31st gate, or the 16th gate, none of these gates out of the throat lead to a motor. That means that there is not enough energy, and is why so many people are looking for grants and for energy in order to be able to experiment. This Cross of Planning with the Sun in the 16t gate is all about identifying with an experiment to get that experiment done. It doesn't mean that they will easily get that. Of course, that can lead to all kinds of difficulties in terms of their emotional ego.

The three stop codons in our genetic code have a relationship with three specific hexagrams - the 12, the 33, and the 35. With a start codon, such as the 41, that is like capitalizing the letter at the beginning of a genetic sentence, but stop codons are punctuation marks. Some of them are full stop and some are sort of like commas. The 12 is a full stop, but the 35 is kind of like a comma, sort of like a comma.

The 35th gate, under enormous pressure as the manifesting gate of desire, carries all of that experiential pressure that is there in humanity. We've already seen that the very first job of the program in genetically structuring the whole is to get us caught up in plane of desire. Needing to go after those experiences, needing to get more, we need to go on to the next valley. We need, we need, we need ... In order to be civilized, there is a point of restraint that you have to meet. It was like Genghis Khan - he realized what's the sense of butchering all of them. It is a lot of work, so instead he'd go into a village, take all of the males, and then send out invitations to all of the places that he wanted to conquer. Invited for a fiesta, when they would arrive, the heads of those captured from the village would be sticking up above the earth. While everybody was having dinner, they would negotiate. Why waste all of that energy.

The 35th gate's potential voice is to say, "I have been there and done that - there is a better way or there is no way. But, I have been there. I know that experience. I don't need that experience, and we don't have to do that." Now that is the potential, but it doesn't mean that it is necessarily going to be like that, since they are under enormous pressure, if you ever have to deal with a 35/36 in your life, you will understand what that pressure is like. These are human beings that are lost in one of the most volatile systems - even with clarity, an education, and understanding their design, don't think that that is an easy piece of business to deal with. To understand the emotional being is to recognize that the emotional digestion is changing the cells over seven years, and that you can have an emotional problem right up until the last cell, because that is the emotional system.

The 35/36 does not have an awareness potential. It is simply the blind energy to progress. So here with the second version of the Right Angle Cross of Consciousness, instead of it being rooted in the mind with the doubt and pressure from the head center, it is rooted in the 35h gate, the potential to either succumb to desire or not. That's why there is sort of a comma here with the 35. The real voice of the 35 can say, "I feel and usually I feel like a change. It doesn't mean I need the change now." You could not have the Sun in the 35 in the Quarter of Initiation. as this Quarter of Civilization is all about progress after all. It is the 35 that does all of that, and brings us all of the experiences we need. From a therapeutic point of view, you could stand back and say, "Gee these 35s - what we have to do is calm them down and get them to see that they don't have to jump and all of this stuff." But then our experience would be deeply limited.

The fact that Human Design is here now and Ra can talk in that language to a 35 is only an indication that they are at end of their rope - that in and of itself, they are running out of experiences. Where in the hell are we going to go? We don't belong in space, as much as everybody would like to think that is okay - our bodies fall apart out there, as they were not made for that. There is no place to run around on the planet any more. We have run out of new experiences, so it is finally possible for the 35 to say, "Yeah, been there, done that." We have been there. We have done that, and we are at a point in which finally that whole thing is slowing down.

When we come to the Sun in the 45th gate, we come to the beginning of government. Having already seen this Right Angle Cross of Rulership in the first quarter, we saw it through its sweetest aspect, through grace. All of the power of rulership and what can be heavy in rulership were given a very nice edge by coming out through the 22nd gate. Those were the kind of rulers, at the beginning of rulership, that were able to begin the process of education, which is the primary responsibility of the ruler. A ruler that listens and is open, as we saw in the first quarter, can find out what the problems are within the community. Thus, being able to begin to remedy them. But here we are dealing with a different aspect - this is real rulership. The people coming in on these crosses are here to take power.

45s in their lifetime will be offered territory and power. Now obviously it doesn't mean that they are offered to run a nation. However, throughout their life, those opportunities at many levels, personal and otherwise, are going to be there. In looking at the Right Angle Cross of Rulership, with this second version, the theme is all rooted in the 45, the voice of possession. This is the most possessive of all crosses. "This is mine! It is not yours. It is mine. The land you are on is mine. The air you breathe is mine."

It's hard to be in the world today and have the Cross of Rulership. After all, at least in the Western world, we don't have any kind of real tribal structure anymore. We have all melted into the collective, and the leadership that we honor now is not the strong man; it is not the king. For us, kings and queens are entertainment, and we them put them in our movie magazines. The fact is that what we respect today is elected leadership, which is logical (channel 31/7). So the 45/21s have a hard time. Where you find the 45/21s now is in the boardroom. In other words, they have created new fiefdoms and kingdoms that operate in the culture and subculture of corporations in the business world. This is the natural place now for the 45/21; it is the natural place for this energy.

What this cross brought originally was this demand for a ruler, a controller. But it also started something else. It is all about money, collecting money, and getting money. It is about understanding that not only must the individual have more than he or she needs, but society as a whole has to have more than it needs. Society needs to have resources in order to pay for the services necessary to keep the people quiet - a chicken in every pot, for example. So this rulership has a deep material quality to it, which will lead naturally into our era, into the boardroom.

Jack London was a wonderful American writer of the late 19tn century, well known actually for animal and wilderness stories. But he was an early socialist and he wrote a book called the Iron Heel. It was an extraordinary book all about these vast capitalistic oligarchies that take over and rule everything. Once you take away their blood rulership, they have got to have something to do. What is Billie going to do with 90 Billion dollars? You might as well exercise some power.

This place of business is a very important turning point, for without business; there is no real possibility to have language. Writing began as counting. If you go into the first city-states in Mesopotamia, they were collecting all of the grain that was being grown outside, but they needed to keep records. In building an enclosed environment, they found that they didn't need as many workers to work the fields. Thus, the surplus of workers could do other jobs - make shoes, baskets, pottery, whatever the case may be. Since they were able to store the grain, not only did they have to figure out how to count all the grain and mark it, but also on top of that they had to identify the owner - no business, no writing.

Being in a fertile basin that was all full of clay, they begin to make these little clay tablets and put scratch marks in them. These scratch marks were a counting. Hey, the world is a business, least we forget, and it has always been a business. This is where the business of the world began. This is the link between true rulership and its relationship to education - business actually does that. You make money and you have to record it. 3000 years ago you could ride a camel from the Middle East to China with a piece of paper that gave you credit to buy goods at the other end This was done so that you didn't have to travel that long distance carrying gold which could be stolen. Business makes the world grow. The organizing of resources keeps everybody happy. It was very soon after the first writing and recording took place in Mesopotamia that you had banks and bankers. They were there right away. People think that is new - they were there right away.

With the end of the first eight hexagrams, we come back to the Right Angle Cross of Eden. In the first variation the Sun was in the 36, so we obviously had the crisis Eden - your crisis is that you took a bite, and to hell with you. Get out there and go live in the world; go be in the world, go deal with all of that. Living out your sexual life, you go ahead and see what happens. It looks like fun; it feels like fun, but then you get children and have to go to work. That's okay, because that is what we are sending you out there to do - go ahead, go out there and work, and do all those things. In the second variation the Sun is in the 12th gate, the gate of articulation. We are dealing with the 12¹ in this cross, this very, very important polarity, the relationship between our capacity to articulate and the opening of mind. The mutation that opened the mind took place in the 11th gate, and the mutation that opened up our capacity to articulate, that is the dropping of the larynx, took place in the 12n gate.

This Right Angle Cross of Eden is the cross of the snake - "Come with me, let's go out into the world, and let's learn." This is what the 12 says, "This is great, this is great - look at all that stuff that we can deal with and work with and look for and find out - that's all great." It also means that the very first thing that comes out of being thrown out of the garden is art. You can't have civilization without art; you just can't. Here in the 12th gate, this is where art begins, and it begins as sound. Beginning as acoustic, probably in its original form it was very primitive chanting of one kind or another. At some point the oscillation in the voice would lead to the rudiments to what we would call today singing - in other words, the beginning of music.

In this process of setting up our genetic structure, after the power and the material possession of the 45, the balance comes and says, "Yes, yes, yes - that's all very nice, but there is also art. There is also creativity." One of the things about creativity is that it is a way of trying to recapture what's been lost, of finding paradise again. It is a way of finding whatever one cannot have materially.

But more than that it is guiding us. The very, very first depictions were always those that related to our spiritual life. Most of them related back to the very basic 49tn gate theme of killing. In the old caves in Spain, you see are the paintings of animals that were hunted. In the Right Angle Cross of Eden because of the Sun in the 12h gate, we get art. When the Sun is in the 11tn gate, we'll get the beginning of public education - education for everyone, where ideas are something that belong to the entire collective. You can't live in innocence, because innocence is ignorance. It's not what we are here for, and it's not what we're given. These are beings that when they come into the world really have to deal with the plane of the world.

We now come to the second grouping of eight hexagrams in this Quarter of Civilization. Remember that the Vessel of Love divides the quarters, so here we have the 15th gate in the second variation of the Right Angle Cross of the Vessel of Love. In the first quarter, in initiation, we saw it through its initiating function - through the 25 gate and larger love at work. With the Sun in the 15th gate, we have the love of humanity that operates through this gate of Extremes - that is extremes in rhythm. Within the love of humanity is the ability to be able to accept a broad spectrum of rhythms that make up the larger flow.

This is a cross in which the interests are all about the future, because it is part of the logical process. Logic operates by dealing with the pattern in the now and then always projects into the future, based on that pattern. The beings carrying this cross always want to know how they can organize things better; so more love can be shared. But, the love of humanity can also be a great distaste for humanity. However, the real direction for these forces is their concern about other human beings. By the way, whether they want to be concerned or not.

Since this is a right angle cross, that love isn't for the person carrying this cross. Oh, they may have access to it on occasion, but it is not for them. With their Sun in the 15h gate, there simply is no other way for them to look at things, as it is their personal destiny to care about humanity, its organization, and bringing everyone into a proper flow.

If you have the 33rd gate and the 52nd gate in your chart and you haven't gone to jail yet, you're very lucky. The 52nd gate is Keeping Still Mountain or the Buddha gate, and is the great gate of passive power. It is part of the format energy of the logical process, an energy of focus and concentration. The format energies between the root and the sacral center all have potential for depression. The possible depression for the 52nd gate is that it doesn't have anything worthwhile to do while it is sitting still. The 52nd gate has the ability to concentrate and focus in stillness, which allows us to study, read, sit at the computer, or whatever the case happens to be. In this Right Angle Cross of Service, everything about this service is rooted in passive concentration.

Here is our ability to build bureaucracies. As а cross that is entirely logical, it has a logical, collective responsible to ensure that the pattern is correct, so that we can move securely into the future. By having the focus through the 52nd gate, these are people that want to sit down and think it out. They provide service passively. This providing of service leads back into the tribal structure of the 45/21, in this case it is going to go the 21 (see the juxtaposition cross that follows). The nature of this service is that eventually it is going to become a profession - intellectual service, if you will. You go to somebody to get information.

With the definition of the 18/58, there is a great deal of potential to fuel talent. The job of the 18/58 after all is to provide energy for correction. But, the 18/58 doesn't have any solutions; those are in the 48th gate. Without the identification of the 16 gate, the 18/58 doesn't have the skills to be able to manifest. This is a basic energy, a projected energy, recognizing that something needs to be corrected. So with this Cross of Service, other people are always going to be coming to you. The other thing about having the 52 in your profile, you have couch potato tendencies.

With the second variation of the Right Angle Cross of Tension, the Sun is in the 39th gate and the Earth in the 38th gate. When we first looked at this cross, the provocation was rooted in the 21st gate, which is going to be tense unless it can have access to material expression. In other words, until that 21 finds its 45 at the other end. there is tension. With the Personality Sun in the 39, we're looking at the harmonic in the 55. The 39/55 is the Channel of Moodiness, a deeply individual emotional channel. It has to do with the mood within us to eat, the nature of romance, breathing, singing, music, and art. All of those things are caught up in that stream of romance. It is a mutative stream.

But the 39th gate itself is a gate of provocation and teasing. These people create tension through teasing; they poke at you. But if you poke them, they'll kill you; so don't poke a Cross of Tension. But they are going to poke you endlessly, and if you don't like it, and can't take it, they're going to dump you, because that is the way they work. So they go around creating all of this tension, literally by provoking, and what they are doing is looking for the right spirit.

If you are an emotional generator, and somebody wants you desperately - push them away; that is a wonderful provocation - very good and healthy. No truth in the now for the emotional person. Push them away and then see if they come back again. If they don't want to wait, if they insist, "What you mean I have to wait? I want it now." You're never going to give them anything, as the 39 is provoking to find the right spirit. If there is somebody in your life, and it's usually a loved one that can push your buttons, that is the best trainer you'll ever going to have. Live with somebody on this cross for a long time, and she'll know every button you have ever had, let alone the buttons that are currently working. She'll know how to press all of them, and you really don't where you are at until somebody can hit your buttons. That is the beauty of provocation. However, without awareness, there is a tendency to want to kill them, because they will incessantly push your buttons, creating tension. All they are doing is looking for the right spirit. Of course, when they find the right spirit in life, the tension leaves them.

Like the Cross of Tension in the first quarter, it is important that these people look after their bodies, as the tension manifests in the body. Good exercise is essential, as they certainly need to look after their physical body and keep it fit. If you are going to be obese and the 39/55 carries many food problems, and also be on the Cross of Tension, you are going to have a lot of problems, real physical problems.

The Sun moves into the 53rd gate, the format energy of the logical process. The 53rd gate is the gate of Development, and of beginnings. Mammals happen to have this logical format, and if the 53 is in a dog's chart, this would be the gate of freedom. Don't chain these creatures. With the 53 gate there is enormous root pressure, adrenaline stress pressure, to begin things. In this version of the Right Angle Cross of Penetration, rather than the penetration and shock of the 51, here we're dealing with the 53, which is the pressure to begin new things.

It is a very difficult thing for 53s to maintain stability in their life, because there is always an adrenalized stress, a pressure demanding something new. This can always lead to difficulties in the stability of your relationships, your love life. For example, you fall in love with somebody and are with her, but suddenly there is this pressure inside of you that is still ready for something new. It can give you a sense that the relationship you have isn't worthy, because why would you then still be interested in something new. With the 53rd gate, there is nothing that you can do, as you are always looking for something new - there is always this pressure to start a new cycle, to start something new.

But because of this, these are very, very powerful initiating forces, which start us off into new cycles. Development and growth is the format energy of the experiential process, and is all about the development of society and culture. It is all about not sitting back on your laurels, but beginning new processes. Just because you build a building and complete it, doesn't mean that you stop there - you're already thinking about building the next building, and so forth and so on. There is this need for continued new beginnings.

The other side of this is the Earth in 54, the Marrying Maiden and the gate of ambition. It is all about attracting recognition, approval, and having those higher up in the hierarchy recognize your capacities. This second variation of the Right Angle Cross of Penetration is highly, highly ambitious, and it will be even more ambitious when we get to the Sun in the 54th gate. But even here, the ambition is rooted in starting things. "If I start something new, I'm going to be more successful than if I join in with something old." "Look and see what I'm doing, look at what I'm doing" is what they are basically saying in order to get the recognition that they need. By the way, this can be very deep, as underneath are the 51 and the 57, which have the capacity to penetrate people. Thus, they can get other people involved in the movement of that energy.

These gates, from the throat to the ajna, are awe inspiring, because their job is so extraordinary. The throat center contains our thyroid system, and is the center of our metamorphic capacity. Thus, these three gates from the throat to the ajna are our great metamorphic gates, and that metamorphic capacity is magic.

The 62nd gate of detail is our reasonable or unreasonable voice, our logical voice. It is a voice that says, "I think," and presents you with facts. Yet that voice is responding to a visual pattern in the 17th gate, which it has to translate into language. Since the 62 is the gate of naming things, it is truly the gate of maya. Ra's as a 62 is always coining phrases and names. Osho, also a 62, was always busy giving people names. This is just one of its traits. The way the 62nd gate tries to concretize the conceptual is by giving it a name. The moment that the 62 gives something a name or a formula, it gives a form that other people can grab onto.

So the 62nd gate really is a gate of magic. By being able to logically describe things, giving names to them, and logically giving attributes to those names, it gives us a common ground in which we can understand together. The only thing that gives human beings security, nothing else will ever do that, is understanding. It is only through logic that we can relieve ourselves of the pain. Human Design is just that - logical healing. Its very logic can transform you. That is the beauty of what logic can be.

With the Right Angle Cross of the Maya, the 62d gate gives this cross its name, as this is the gate of the maya. The way in which we measure is the way in which we express things as words; those are our measurements. We all accept a definition together, and in accepting a definition together, it becomes real. It just does. It is the magic that is here.

In this variation, we are not dealing with the 42, and the fact that the maya comes to an end. Yes, we do all have to die, and deal with these death themes, but here what we are dealing with is the 62 saying, "Look - there's a ... what shall we call that? Let's give it a name."

In a skyscraper in New York City, there is a little guy that sits in a tiny office with stacks and stacks of paper, and his job is to give names to stars. It's his job. You can send him your name, pay him, and it's official. But it's this need to name it all. It's like - if you name it, you've got it - that's the maya. If you can't give it a name, well ... When you're trying to remember somebody's name, if you can't give them a name - they're not there, they're fading, they're breaking down in the maya. Names are very important for us.

As one of the most powerful educational forces that we have, these beings brings us deep into this maya that we are living in, by describing that. They are able to describe it in such a way that we have a general understanding of it.

The opposition of the detail of the 62 is the 61, Inner Truth. In other words, inner truth is in the detail. The 61st hexagram's chop has two yang lines followed by two yin lines with two yang lines on top. The yin is in the center; it is buried in the center. It's hidden in the form; it's hidden inside. Inner truth comes out of the detail. When somebody says that you have to believe in this, if you don't get the detail, there is no inner truth. If you don't know how it works, it doesn't matter what it is or what you are talking about. In the end, there is no salvation on the mental plane until you understand. There just isn't.

So here we have this deep, deep theme of logic being able to express the names of things, to give them their names, and to create the maya. By doing so, language is created, because this is where language was created. The capacity to articulate grew out of the 12, but language itself, the creation of language, grammar, and structure, all of that came out of the 62.

The first variation of the Right Angle Cross of the Laws was through the lens of the 3rd gate - mutative law, transforming law. But here we are looking out through the lens of the 56. Since the 56 is pointing toward the 11th gate, we look at its harmonic for its major theme, and it is all about ideas. The 11th gate of Peace represents the experiential mind and the realm of ideals and ideas. Our greatest conflict is the inner conflict about whether mind will be allowed to have authority or not. Here mind is deeply authoritative, because the mind is pointing towards concepts that will lead to rules and laws, based on the ideals of those concepts. Somebody with the Sun in the 56th gate is always being stimulated by, and trying to stimulate you with their idealism.

We just saw the 62nd gate, and remember all of these dynamic gates in the throat come one right after the other in this quarter. The 62np gate is a metamorphic gate of the logical process, and the 56 of the metamorphic process of the abstract. The 56th gate says, "I believe." Not a reasonable or unreasonable voice, this is a voice of hope or despair, which is a very different voice. Where the 62nd voice brings out the facts in a logical structure, the 56 is telling a story. This is the place of parable and of retelling experience - this 56 gate can be spellbinding.

For example, in a political situation with two candidates, a 62 candidate and a 56 candidate, the 62 candidate is going to give you all the dry facts and details. "Well the budget is down, and we're going to have to do this and this and this..." Everything she says will be reasonable or unreasonable, understandable or not, but it is going to be logically structured. The 56 politician doesn't do that at all. He doesn't even talk about the details, but talks about the dream

"This can be a great country and we can be a wonderful and all you have to do is elect me." Everybody is saying, "But yes, but what will he do?" The 56 puts out all this idealistic stuff. "Well, yes we're going to make sure that everybody gets an education." On the other side, the 62 is saying, "No, you can't afford that. It is not possible, as we don't have enough money and it would mean that you would have to raise taxes..." Ignoring that, the 56 says, "Education is the most important thing." Не stimulates you and gets you to go for his idealistic rules and structure - he tells you a story.

The 11th gate is a gate of white magic, and the 48th is black magic. The black magic is in the details, and white magic is in the dream. These are dream sellers. Of course, it is one of those things to recognize that when you get sold a dream law, you might wake up to a horror story. We've had three generations of people who fell in love with the Marxist dream, and have seen what happened in all of that. That particular 11th gate dream turned out to be quite a horror story when you got down to the nitty gritty and the details. Thus, a very different kind of law that comes in here. This is not a natural mutative response to changes in society, climate, location, the blending of culture, or any of these things; this is very much related to idealism, and what we would call promises - promises, promises, promises.

With the Sun in the 31st gate, we have the second variation of the Right Angle Cross of the Unexpected. The 31st gate is the gate of influence and part of the channel of Leadership, the design of the Alpha. This is the beginning of a challenge to both the king and the tribal leader. It is going to be a deep challenge to both, because this represents enough inherent power to draw and attract the collective to select these beings, electing them as leaders.

These are unexpected leaders. As we move along, you'll see other kinds of leaders. But, these are the unexpected leaders that come out of nowhere - one moment they are not on the map, and the next moment they are. So these people can claim power, take influence very unexpectedly, and it can come in any kind of guise. It is like Lyndon Johnson becoming President of the United States - that's the unexpected. All of a sudden you get elevated, when the unexpected takes place, and suddenly you're given authority or an influence that you didn't have before. This takes place all of the time.

Deep psychological problems can come with this cross, because many people on it will inherit from parents that die young. Not to be morbid, but it is one of those things about coming into influence, coming into power unexpectedly, and also having to deal with it, whether one is equipped or not to handle that.

Throughout the right angle, you dealing with the Earth's grounding in the 28 gate. As you move along in that process, risk taking becomes a deeper and deeper and deeper dilemma.

Also out of the Cross of the Unexpected we have discovery. So these are people who get discovered as leaders. Now if you looked at them or met them, you would never consider them to be a leader. But in the moment of the unexpected, you know the typical Hollywood movie, when a plane crashes and the unlikeliest character becomes the hero - they unexpectedly can take power, influence, and guide everybody else. In other words, only those moments of the unexpected bring out the possibility of real leadership in these beings.

This cross brings us to the close of the quarter with the Sun in the 33rd gate and the second variation of the Right Angle Cross of the Fours Ways. Here we have the only gate of the Four Ways that is in the throat. This is the way of manifesting. Yet at the same time the 33 gate, being the gate of retreat is a gate of privacy, and the need for withdrawal. It is the need for the sanctity of something very special. We have been moving through this quarter of civilization, and there is something very funny about this point that we are at right now. You see civilization begins with having a separate room that is where it starts, here with the need for that privacy.

Now that privacy may not be personal. It is a privacy that says, "I'm going to shelter my family, or whatever the case may be." But it begins with this enclosure and with this ability to enclose oneself within the sanctity of one's own realm. It is one of the most important benefits that we have in civilization is the ability to have our own spaces. This is the beginning of that and the demand for that.

Now that also means something else. It means that you have to have own territory, which translates into many things. The 19t gate, the Personality Earth, in mammals is the most territorial of all gates. Here is the place where you establish your territory by having your own physical dwelling - to have your own house, your own property - to be free in that sense. This way of retreat is not simply the way we use it in analytical terms in Design, where we are talk about this need to go into privacy - this is where that privacy is made possible. It is rooted in this. There is no privacy, unless you have a place to go to that is your own.

For thirteen years now, Ra has been telling people to sleep in their own bed in their own room. They have no idea how important that is. This is part of this process that is rooted here. It is the sanctity and the importance of that space. From the Dream Rave work, it is known that having somebody in your aura while you are asleep is a deeply distorting thing, because you are not operating correctly in the nature of what you are designed to be doing while you are in that sleeping state. Thus, the privacy necessary to have your own space, that is something that begins here.

But something else also begins here. This is where we start being cut off from the sky. Architects are the first villains - they put a roof over your head. You go into the city and say to somebody, "When is the Moon going to be full?" They don't even know that there is a Moon. They have no idea that there is a Moon. So we now have our privacy and a place where we can be enclosed, but it also has closed us off from nature. We begin this illusion that we are not animals anymore, that we are somehow different and civilized, and so forth and so on.

We are now seeing the third variation of the Right Angle Cross of the Sphinx. Again, the sphinx is about giving direction, but the transition here, as always, is that a cross operates through the theme of the position of the Personality Sun. But in looking at that position we also always look at the harmonic gate, because that is the way or the path that the cross "wants to take" towards fulfillment. In looking at the 7tn gate, it is about our roles in leadership, that is logical leadership - that role is always looking for a way to be influential (the harmonic 31).

In dealing with the four arms of Sphinx, two of them are individual - on the Design side, the 2nd and the 1st gates. The other two are collective with the 13 gate of openness, but also concerned about the past, and the 7th gate, part of the logic process, looking forward and trying to project into this future. This is the most proactive Cross of Sphinx, as what we get are those who really want to be directors and give you a direction. Inherent in that Personality Sun in the 7h gate is their wanting to be able to lead, because that is the role. I don't have the opportunity at this point to take you in any depth through the variation of what is right angle, or juxtaposition, or left angle - that will wait another time.

But keep something in mind with a role gate like this, as we're going to see several role gates in this quarter. A perfect way to look at this is that the 7 is the Authoritarian. So with 1st line personality, in that 7th gate, they are going to actively want to be the authoritative leader. They are going to look for places where they can be influential, and where they do have that authority. But if they come in on the 2nd line, they are going to be Democratic. Oh, yes they are going to be active, but they are going to be active trying to get your vote, not active trying to tell you what to do. Those that come in on the 3r line are going to be Anarchists active about trying to tear things down. After all, we have two kinds of politician - the one that promises something new and the other who promises to get rid of something old. The anarchist gets rid of the old; it is nothing glamorous. Out of the 4th line, you're going to have a totally different kind of leadership. This is somebody who will accept the opportunity to lead, but will never really be secure in that leadership and always open for that leadership to disappear - Abdication. In other words, I'm giving you a general theme - with the Personality in the 7th gate and looking for the influence, it really wants to be a Sphinx. It wants that opportunity to give you direction, but understand there are subtlies in that. The person needs to play out their role, depending on the nuance of that cross.

By the way, when I opened up the Global Incarnation courses, I wanted you to grasp something. When you have somebody that is born with their Personality Sun in the 7th gate and 1st line - we are only looking at general themes. Understand that that line has 1,080 sub-themes. There are 1,080 variations of crosses in that one line. Thus, the whole reason behind introducing the incarnation index is so that I could take you down to the minutiae of this knowledge. Then you can see that the logic goes to a level of depth that is really incomprehensible. Yes, it starts here with these crosses, but the crosses are way up above the surface with so much down below. There are very few true variations per any cross of living beings, and with that you can really see, understand, and grasp, just as pure logic, the unbelievable value of your own life. It is not like there are hundreds of others, millions of others that can take your place, because these crosses are really extraordinary. We all come in on a cross and it is not just this big surface out there, it goes deep, deep, deep down

This leads us to the 4th gate, Youthful Folly and to the third variation of the Right Angle Cross of Explanation. Now we have seen a number of variations already in which this cross brings out a need for expression, a need to bring out knowing. We've talked about the nature of the metamorphic gates in the throat and how different the individual process is from the collective process. The collective process translates images into language, patterns into language, but the individual process is translating an illusionary inner acoustic into an actual acoustic. A teacher asking his class a question sees about 17 hands going up, and at the same time hears six or seven voices going, "I know, I know!" - all the little freaks in that class saying, "I know, I know." When the teacher says, "Okay what's the answer?" Their replies are like: "It was in here, it was really in here. I heard it. I heard the answer in my head, but can't get it out of my mouth." This is the difficulty of that acoustic translation, and why individuals have such a hard time, and need to work on explanation. If you have an individual child or a child that has the 23rd gate, you need to invest a great deal of time in listening to them explain, so they get practice and learn how to articulate and express themselves, because it is a very difficult process.

With this third variation of the Right Angle Cross of Explanation, we have the Sun in the 4th, which can be both beautiful and terribly amusing. After all, the 4th gate is there to come up with answers; that is its job. The fact that they come with an answer doesn't mean those answers are right. This is one of those things about having a gate that does a job. The job of this gate is to come up with answers, so if you are living with that gate, you think you have answers. But, it doesn't mean that that answer is true. For it to be true, it has to become an opinion that is then substantiated by detail, which is turned into experimentation, which is then verified. In other words, the logical process demands a great deal.

What you really have in the 4th gate is theory. "I think this is the answer." These are people who try to explain to you what they think the answer is. They are always trying to tell you what the answer is. On this cross, one has difficulty in translating what you hear within yourself as an answer, and then you have to bring it out through the 43/23, out through the individual metamorphic process.

So these are people who are always trying to tell you the answer, and it takes them years, because it doesn't come out right. As an individual, they keep on repeating the bizarre in the hope that it will become familiar. This variation of the Cross of Explanation is full of theorizing, and theorizing that loses its logical quality because it has to become individual. I don't want to give these people a bad reputation, but you know they come up with the quirkiest theories. Creating some of the real bizzara we have out there, they have a great deal of trouble trying to back it up and explain it. However, every once and awhile we do get good out of that, not to give them a bad name.

There are certain gates, from the very beginning of my teaching of Design fourteen years ago, that I have made fun of endlessly. The Abysmal is a gate that I've made fun of forever. Now of course that is my own prejudices, because I don't have the 29th gate, so I consider it hilarious. I watch people who say yes so fast, so automatically, and so often - what a burden they place on their life. So look at that gate and think, "Wow!"

The 29th gate is the gate that kills us. It has enormous, enormous importance in our lives. Since it is part of the cycle that creates the timing system that brings a human life to an end, when in its biology, the 29th gate says "No," you start a cycle that leads to your death. So I can make fun of this gate, as it is kind of cute on the surface - people jumping into things all the time. However, it is a gate that has great significance.

In looking at this third variation of the Right Angle Cross of Contagion, we have the 29 and the 30. This 29th gate of saying yes, of making commitments, is part of the abstract process, and part of the channel of succeeding where other people fail or failing where other people succeed. This is a tantric channel. The gate of commitment leads directly to the love of the body in the 46th gate, which is what this 29th gate is looking towards for its fulfillment. In other words, it is looking towards fulfillment through commitment. Now what we are going to see is that of course this commitment is going to lead us ultimately into intimacy and reproduction.

So when you see this Right Angle Cross of Contagion with the Sun in the 29h gate, you know these are people that are leaping into things. Of course, they are often casualties. A splenic generator with the 29th gate who is asked by somebody, "Do you want to go out?" When she replies, "Uh huh," there is absolutely nothing wrong with that commitment; it's perfect. It is very simple. It is not about that the 29 gate is a plague; it's not. But it is one of those gates that is brutal on the ignorant, just brutal. What happens to the 29tn gate is that you overload yourself, burden yourself, and weigh yourself down until finally you collapse, breaking promises. This is the cross of breaking promises, and it is not suppose to be. But it is what it is.

This is what leads to the real bonding and intimacy. It is one of the jokes. The inconsistencies that come out of commitment drive us to find a commitment that can really last, something that can really hold us together - the Abysmal, the deep within the deep, this dark place is that. It is really there in the beginning to drive us to find a way to assure a bond between this and that, between the yin and the yang.

This brings us to the 59th gate, one of the eight profiling gates, and one of six role gates. With our genetic role sexually in intimacy, we come to the third variation of the Right Angle Cross of the Phoenix where the Sun is in the 59th gate, in the intimacy itself. The 20/34 is still here as a definition, and the 59 is operating out of that. In other words, this 59 is very, very powerful, particularly with the Sun in this position.

We've talked about the Sleeping Phoenix and about the fact that this is something in a process of change; that there is a mutation coming here. This mutation is going to directly impact on our sexuality and on the way in which the emotional system operates. Here you can see the source of the sexual transformation. I have no idea what the description of the six lines of the 59 are going to be like, in the sense of the way in which they will operate, post-mutation. There is no way of knowing such things. The people that are coming in on this cross, allthree variations that carry the Sun in the 59th gate, are the ones that bring us all of our sexual conditioning, after all. Each of these crosses coming into the world, and all of their twelve versions, carry all of the themes of sexuality, all of them.

For example, the 59', as I teach in sexuality, is the caveman/cavewoman line. He sees her, hits her over the head, and drags her home, or she sees him, hits him over the head, and drags him home. There is a whole cross of people that are doing this - looking for somebody, hitting them over the head, and dragging them home. Of course, they don't do that as generators, they do that as manifestors. Thus, we end up with a lot of people that get dragged home that don't want to live there.

The 592 brings a different strategy, a strategy of shyness, and of calling others to penetrate them. Or think about the people where the Personality Sun is in the 59, that brings all kinds of things: promiscuity, broken relationships, bonds made and broken - they carry that energy as they come into the world. If you are carrying that in your cross and don't know your nature or your mechanics, the chances of keeping a relationship is no longer than a breath.

This Quarter of Duality is launched here, in this intimacy, this need for intimacy and of having someone to bond with, as well as to find security in that bonding. By the way, when I say security, that is really security at the genetic level. Your genes are not satisfied until you have an orgasm. That is what they work for, and they are much more involved in that than you are. That is their full time work to find some way to move that stuff. "Let's keep us going on and on and on" - that is their drive. Those that come in on these crosses are essential to keeping human life going. These are the great fertile agents, and there will be a time when these fertile agents will be very prized incarnations, because fertility, obviously, or at least in this context, fertility is going to have its problems.

It is a great pun on deliverance - that ego always has to deliver the goods, hey? It is also the place where you can wake up to God, to spiritually, to light. Here we have the definition of the 40/37 in this third variation of the Right Angle Cross of Planning, this is the global cycle that we are presently in. The 40/37 at the mystical level is about our search for and our denial of God and spirituality. The 37 is open and waiting, hoping and expectant that there is such a thing, that they will be touched. The 40th gate is on the other side saying, "That is all bullshit. It is not true, and all you want me to do is build the damn church. You just want my brawn."

At the mystical level, there is this fundamental tension that is always there. Here you have the Sun in the gate of denial. In Design there are two gates of denial, both out of the ego: the 26 and the 40. The 40th gate of aloneness is the gate that says, "I don't need your affection, because it is going to cost me, and I don't know if it's worth it." Remember the bargain between the 40 and 37. The 37 says, "I will be affectionate with you." The 40 replies, "Alright, let me figure out how much that affection is worth. How much of my labor is it worth? Is it worth taking out the garbage every night? don't know. Maybe you are going to have to increase that level of affection over here." Remember the 40/37 are deeply in the bargain; that's their game.

Because they are emotional, as this is an emotional ego, at the moment they make a bargain, they're at a certain place in their wave. But the next moment the wave shifts. It is like moving the radio dial slightly away from the station; it begins to shift, and they can lose contact with it. This process is also true for the way that emotional people learn. I've had many experiences teaching emotional people, and they are clearly aware of what I taught them in the moment. Yet, the very next day, they will come back with the very same dilemma to me. Now sometime later when they get to the same place in their wave that they were when they took in that awareness, there is this ah ha, because the emotional system takes time to digest. One of the difficulties of the bargain of the 40/37 is that the moment that they make their bargain, as they move through, they forget the grounds upon which the bargain was made. They can think that they had another bargain; they often do.

In the Cross of Planning with the 40th gate is a point of resistance in the planning process, because the 40th gate is going to demand, "Why it is necessary for me to use my energy? How much energy will I have to use to do that?" That is great if you are a 16 and saying, "This is going to be great. We build this building, and then all of this can access to this and that." - that is the 16 with its enthusiasm and identification with the project. With the Sun in the 16, you get all that enthusiasm. But here it is different with the 40 saying, "Wait a minute. You're very enthusiastic, but I have to do the work. So I want to know how much work I have to do? How much are you going to pay me? When am I going to be allowed to have my vacation?" The bargain immediately comes in, but the bargain comes in from the denial side. It doesn't mean that they don't get involved in the planning, but they are the ones that will refuse to be suckered in. When the Sun is in the 37, it is different. "Oh yeah, I'm ready for the bargain. Let's do it. I'll be really nice to you - you go out and work, okay?" I'm a 40 and I know the 37 game.

With the Sun in the 64th gate, Before Completion, we get our third variation of the Right Angle Cross of Consciousness. We need to have everything, and in needing to have everything, we need those forces that inspire us. Any of the beings that come in on the Cross of Consciousness, any of these variations of that cross, they are here to be inspiring agents. However, remember the irony of that - those that inspire others are often deeply confused and in doubt themselves. In other words, the way in which they integrate their own mental pressure is very different, than the way that mental pressure is taken by others who can gain access to it.

The 64th gate is the pressure gate of the abstract mental process. The way that works is that we take in experience in the now and all of that experience gets stored. It is through these gates in the head center that that information comes back. It comes back in ways that are changed. For example, if you are logical, the now will come back simply as a snapshot, a picture of something, or a pattern that you can be suspicious of or not. However, on the abstract side with the 64th gate, what you are getting is a flood of moving images, sequences of events. People with this gate are always under the uncomfortable pressure of trying to make sense out of their past. If he has given his mind mental authority, he's going to have great difficulty making sense out of his own past, and it is all going to become a problem. But when he meets somebody else, he can easily resolve his or her problem with the past. In other words, these people can be inspiring for others and open up the possibility that they can get something out of that.

Whenever I come to a profile that includes a mental gate, it is so important to remind all of us what that means - we have millions of incarnations coming in and giving mind mental authority, because it is the dominate force in their existence. That mental authority is causing so many problems. I have worked with lots of 64s and have watched the change in their mental life when they come to grips with what that energy is about. Remember, we can't get rid of mind. You can't stop the 64 from pondering the past, but the moment that the mind no longer has authority there is a difference. But you can't tell your mind that it doesn't have authority anymore, because it isn't going to listen.

Your mind only knows it has lost its authority, when the authority has truly been transferred somewhere else. It is one of my favorite things, my mind. All of the time my mind says to me that I have to do something - it says, "Make a phone call, or you should really do this or that. Sitting at my desk and looking at 25 readings and my mind says, "You should really do that." My body does nothing; I don't reach for a tape. I don't turn on the machine. I watch and my body does nothing. My mind is so bloody embarrassed - it knows that it's lost all of its authority. It sitting there thinking, "Well, you're not going to do those now, so let me think about something else we could do, desperately looking." Meanwhile I'm just sitting there. You can't tell it, because it will just argue with you and win. All you can do is truly transfer the authority in your life, and then you see what a blessing that is.

You mind messes you up as much as it screws you up. You know it drove me nuts. It always wanted to do something. But by understanding that that is what my mind likes to talk about, that this is its habit - it just likes to talk about all that stuff. So if you are have this abstract gate and you're always plowing through your mother in the kitchen - every day you are seeing your mother in the kitchen and remembering your mother in the kitchen - don't turn that into a psychological problem. Don't turn that into "Why am I remembering my mother in the kitchen?" It's not going to do any good. If it becomes the authority and you follow that line, you're just going to suffer. The people that are coming in on this cross have a great deal of mental anxiety. They are under pressure, and people mostly on crosses that carry mental gates, can have the most consistent problems with their eyes and with headaches.

This is a very, very unusual transition, that you're not going to see very often in Design, in which the previous gate, the 64th gate, is leading into its harmonic gate, the 47th. In other words, this is a movement that is actually creating a definition, which is a moving definition, in that sense. So it is a very important energy. Obviously with this position in the wheel, these two gates together have a very, very deep connection to each other in their flow. The Left Angle Cross of Domination where disinformation was a theme - this is going to lead into the 47th gate, the Right Angle Cross of Rulership, that is to the legitimacy of rulership. Look at the difference in the transition. The 64th gate is just open, full of all of this stuff from the past and is moving this stuff through. So its pressure is always to look for the other side, the 47th gate. "I've got to make sense out of it. I've got to make sense out of it." Out of that comes their anxiety. Remember, what torments us is what we're not, not what we are.

On the other side with the Sun in the 47th gate, this Cross of Rulership is looking for inspiration from the past, taking its inspiration from the past. This is one of the most common little hooks that you have in political speech writers of America - so if you want John McCain to sound better, you put a little Reganism in his mouth. You make sure that everybody knows that's a quote from the past. Borrowing from the past, borrowing from the traditions of the past in order to bring them forward and to use them, to interpret them through the 47, to make sense out of them, and from that to be able to claim your role, to be able to claim your rulership.

Think about that begins with the rulership, the 45 - now that's trial and error. In other words, it is a way in which rulership is trying to overcome the mistakes of the past. So it's not just about idolizing the past. In the same moment that the politician uses the past through Reganism, on the other hand they take the Carterism to put down the past. They can use it both ways - making sense out of it and using it to their advantage, what didn't work in the past, in order to try to establish their rulership. Remember something about the nature of rulership - you get this here when you finally reach this left angle position - rulership has a commitment to education. By increasing the awareness of its people, the ruler increases the wealth of its tribe, and ultimately its nation. It is one of the most dynamic themes in that - learning from the past is what this cross is about.

Thousands of people are going to incarnate with this cross, and not all of them are going to have the ideas of rulership that are expressed as an archetype. But they are going to have it at all the mundane levels of their life. These people make incredible researchers, and are very good at researching power, at researching the past. That is one of the basic themes of history. For most of recorded history, at least what we call recorded history, which really has been around for very long, the only thing that was ever recorded was the lives of those who ruled. Common history is a phenomenon of the 20 century - it is the first time that we have such a thing. But in past, all history was about those who ruled. Of course that is where this comes from - this is one of the roots of that.

This leads us to the 6th gate, which is very profound, and very important for us. It is one of the eight profiling gates. It is the 6t gate that actually determines whether intimacy is going to take place or not. Remember that the 59th gate has a strategy, but it is the 6 that is the diaphragm, because it controls the pH determining whether it is going to be either open or closed, according to the nature of the wave.

The wave of the 6th gate, the wave of intimacy, is the most unusual of all emotional waves. If you deal with somebody that only has intimacy and no other emotional definition and compare it to other emotional definitions, you'll notice right away the difference - it is not as emotive in the way in which we understand the general emotional field coming out of the solar plexus. To begin with the 6tn gate itself is a complexity - it is in the 6th gate where the actual motor itself is. In other words, the 6th gate generates this wave that we will call the emotional wave. When I say "generates," it is this natural relationship to the sacral. But more than that, it actually divides up that wave into its different nuances. In other words, the root of desire is in the 6 gate, the root of romance is in the 6th gate, and the root of need is in the 6th gate - it is all there in this gate of Conflict.

One thing to be certain about is that when generations and generations and generations of children come into the world carrying the mutation in the emotional system, that the gate of Conflict can finally change its name. We'll leave that to some seer three or four hundred years from now to figure out what that name is going to be. But it sure isn't going to be conflict. Today intimacy is conflict because intimacy is guided by the emotional system and the emotional system's lack of clarity in the now. The power of the emotional system blinds us, thus, so much intimacy and fertility is generated in a moment in the wave, and yet doesn't lead to bonds and relationships that are necessarily successful. With awareness, our intimacy will change. So the 6 gate is very powerful.

Here we have it as the prime gate, where the Sun is in our third variation of the Right Angle Cross of Eden. It is the 6 gate that is in fact both God and the Devil - that's kind of nice. It is the 6 gate that says, "No, no, no. I don't really need the apple. I am happy with my innocence." But it is also the 6h gate that says, "Oh, yes. I want that apple. Let me go out there and fuck my brains out." It is all there in that 6th gate.

When you are looking at this right angle cross at Eden, you see this place where those children are not happy with the fact that they have been thrown into the world. They don't like it. These are the children that don't want to come out of the womb. That would be a great statistic - late pregnancies for children that carry this cross. You'll see that they are there; they don't want to come out into the world. They don't want to be thrown into the mess.

Here with the theme Sun in the 6th gate, the whole thing is about intimacy and whether or not intimacy can really work. The whole goal is to find the right sexual strategy, to find the right variation of that 59th gate. The only way to be able to leave Eden is to live life, have children, and die, because that is the whole movie. You see these are beings that truly have to grasp that. It is just about life - it just about life. People are always saying to me, "Well what is it all about?" I keep on saying the same thing, and they just don't get it, as they keep asking the same question over and over again.

It is just about life. Being is just about life - it isn't about anything else. It is just life. It 's not about - there's no reason, there's no nothing - it's just: this is life. They're the one's that have to go deep into that. They become our prophets and our greatest teachers, because they teach us the obvious - you're given a body, sexual organs, genetic imperatives - go live it out. Don't resist that! Don't go back looking for that innocence.

You know how many New Age people have asked me about Atlantis? I am up to here with retros and all their nonsense. "Oh it was always better back there!" That's not true. It was dirty, messy, ugly, grimy, and full of death. You want to live in Babylon? The stink of Babylon - give me a break with all that stuff. But again they are here. You can't do anything about them. 1 make fun of them, but I can't do anything about them - there are always going to be retros, and they are always going to be saying, "Oh, yes but it was so good back then. Everything was perfect."

If you come in on the Cross of Eden, every time you think that way, the Gods will smack you so hard. You see, these beings know how heavy the world is, as they are the ones that know how heavy it is to be in a body, what it means to carry this - they understand that. So there is a part of them that would like to get rid of it - thank you very much. "Let's go back to the innocence. Let's get out of the meat - the meat decays and dies. Let's get out of this." The only thing that stops that is when they find somebody - that is what they need in life, in order to fulfill that, in order to see why they were sent out of the garden.

To be in the world as yourself is to be in the best possible places. There is nothing more beautiful than life, and there is no burden in this life when you surrender to what it is to be you, and allow life to do its thing. In being in the world, I would not be in the world and could not enjoy this world without my children. It is the closest thing that I get to what life is. That is life - it is what you do. It is what we are here for. There is nothing else. All the rest of it is just game. If you live out your own nature, you see everything that is there for you to see, and you have in your life who is there for you to have. Whatever concept that you are going to enjoy will be the right one for you, it doesn't matter what the other thinks. It is just about being in the world. So these forces have to come into the world and of course, I can speak from my perspective and describe that in a way that is truly spiritual, but after all for those who carry this cross, it is hard to get to that place. They do carry the burden of what it is to be in this life.

We are now at the midpoint of this third quarter, and notice what happened in the first eight hexagrams of this quarter. Not only do you have all the sexual dynamics and the demand for intimacy, but you also have the dilemma of mind, the dilemma of the abstract mind focused on the past. As the Quarter of Duality, it really is about the interrelationship between the yin and the yang, between the male and the female. In the first eight gates, we have been looking at the physical dynamic of the relationship between the sexes. With the 46th gate, we get out of the influence of direction. Since each quarter begins with a Sphinx gate, the seven gates that follow are all part of a directional flow. Here we get to a gate of love, so the theme of love is going to move through the next seven gates.

With the Sun in the 46h gate, Pushing Upward, we have the third variation of the Right Angle Cross of the Vessel of Love. This is the ninth year that I have been formally teaching Human Design and for all of these years I have been asked, "What is tantra?" People are always asking me this, because they know that the channels between the sacral center and the identity, the G center, are called tantric channels, which drives them all nuts. I never really answer them, because the answer that I would give them isn't one that they are looking for anyway. So it doesn't really matter. The 46th gate is the love of the body, and anyone with the 46th gate in their profile is deeply conscious of their body - of changes in their body, of pain in their body. They notice all of these little minutiae of what it is to be in form.

The 46th gate also has an unusual quality, in that it is a gate of potential great good fortune, because it is about the acceptance of being in the right place at the right time. That right place at the right time happens to be the body that you are in. This is very different from where we just were, the beings on the Cross of the Plane who are thrust into the world, into the depth of the maya. The moment that you come out of that, you come to, "Gee, it's great to be in a body. Let's make love. Let's have some fun." In other words, you come into a very different level, because this is not about direction anymore. Yes, yes, yes, we've got to be deeр here in the maya, but there are compensations - There is love after all. If you are not in the body, you are not going to know love.

The 46th gate carries with it the potential to really be in love with the world, which means that they are often not spiritual at all. In other words, it doesn't matter to them; they are not looking for that way out. In many ways they are looking to get deeper and deeper in because it feels good as they move into it. There is a sensuousness that is there with the Sun in the 46. The Personality position is always pointing the cross towards what its fulfillment can be, and here the fulfillment is pointed towards the 29th gate, which is a gate of this quarter, part of the structure here of the duality. What you are looking for is the commitment, the right commitment that will fill the sensual needs of that body - that will not hurt that body; that will not bruise that body. This is the hot love of the four gates of love that come out of the identity. But remember it is not necessarily connected to sexuality, but it is always connected to the sensual, always. In this configuration you find the most sensual of beings with their focus on that.

There is magic to the abstract process even with all of the chaos of the human experiential way, its tendency to have expectations about the future that it knows nothing about, and getting stuck in the past, because that is where it is. The 46th gate represents something unique in the abstract process, which is the only hope of the abstract process - the recognition that you have to be there. The 46 is Art for Art's Sake. Anything that you do, just for the sake of doing, will bring its ultimate reward. This is the secret of the abstract process. It doesn't matter if you go out on a limb on an idea, but be there, be there, be there until it's over. When it is over, then you can reflect. When abstract people are involved in a process and something happens, rather than getting stuck and trying to figure out why that thing happened; keep on keeping on. Look back later, as that is the gift that they have. Look back later, then you can reflect upon it, then perhaps you can make sense out of it. This touch of the existential in the abstract process says, "When you enter into an experience, be in the experience, and then you're going to get the rewards of that experience." In other words, you're going to know more about it, from the perspective of having gone through it.

This bring us to my favorite gate, not that that matters. However, I like it. I like it because it is hilariously funny. This is the gate of black magic, The Well, of depth, of clarity. This is the depth necessary for the skills at the other end in the 16th gate to be fulfilled as talent. So this is the source of what we call talent. It is a gate of solutions, which along with the 36t gate, its mirror on the other side of the bodygraph, are by far the most frustrating of all gates. There is no way of describing how profound the frustration can be at either end.

The 48th gate is something that has been turned into mythology many, many times - the wizard that begs the King for straw that he promises he'll turn into gold. The 48t gate has a solution, but nobody knows if that solution will work. Only with the 16th gate, only with the necessary skills, only through manifestation can it be verified that the solution really does work. Just like people who have the 4th gate and think that they have the answer well, maybe, but it has to be verified. The 48th gate has a solution, but then again maybe it really isn't the solution.

In the third variation of the Right Angle Cross of Tension, the tension is the most profound, because the tension all gets rooted into the 48th gate and its deep frustration of trying to be able to get its solution out and manifested. The 48th gate must fulfill the challenge that begins with the 18th gate. A good metaphor for the 18th gate is that of a leaky faucet - that leaky faucet is dropping, moment by moment, awareness of solutions, and the recognition that this needs to be fixed, that that needs to be fixed - all of that is collected in the 48th gate, the Well. Eventually that well is deep, and the depth of all those insights into correction lead up to the potential of a solution, a logical solution, a pattern solution.

Yet, at the same time, logic is starved for energy, and even when the 48 gets to the 16, it is still a projected channel needing to wait to bе recognized. Even when it gets there, even when it has a collaborator, it doesn't mean that anything can happen other than some blah, blah, blah. So this is a deeply frustrating gate.

The position of the Personality Sun of the cross is pointed towards what it needs for fulfillment, and fulfillment for the 48 comes through the 16. oth So if you've got the 48 gate, you're going to meet the 16, and you don't have to look, as they're everywhere by the way, like everything else. They are really going to come into your life. We're always connected and attracted to what we're not, so there is nothing more important for the 48th gate then to be a 16, but they're not. So 48s run around learning all kinds of skills, learn how to do this and that, this and that - and they feel terrible. The 16, without the 48, doesn't focus on his capacity to be skillful, he wants to be deep. So he goes looking for all of that depth - reads this book, studies this thing, goes to this course, and so forth and so on. It's a joke, and they all suffer out of that - if you are yourself and living out your type and authority, you will get what is meant for you. You get it; it just comes to you.

My dad wanted me to be a doctor, but I didn't want to learn those skills. I couldn't be interested in that. Now I could have spent 7 to 8 years learning those skills, only to discover that I was still a freak and that it wouldn't have meant anything. But instead I finally got to a point where I just relaxed into my own depth and stopped worrying about the skills. Then the skills would come to me, and my depth could then feed those skills. So I can teach a doctor: I don't have to become one. The moment you accept what it is to be you, that is the moment you get what belongs to you. We're not alone; we're not disconnected; we're not separate. Look at all of this stuff - we are in the most complex program you can imagine. It is not like we're in there going, "Well, I could do this." So the solution for this cross, with the Sun in the 48th gate, is to pay attention to the depth, and the skills will come; that is the way it is. Then the tension goes away. Otherwise you are going to meet people who are very, very, very bitter.

This brings us to the third variation of the Right Angle Cross of Penetration, and here through the 57th gate, we actually find the source of the name of this cross - the 57th gate is the root of penetrating awareness. It is about the power of the intuition, and these are the most intuitive people that you are going to find on the planet. Now one of the things about the nature of their intuition is that most of us never get access to it, nor do they necessarily live by it. The spleen is very weak and only communicates with us once. Then it no longer has the strength to tell us again. To actually be somebody that is truly intuitive means that one must have extraordinary inner focus, in order to pay attention to your intuition when it is there. To have a defined mind, a defined emotional system, or a defined anything, these are all distractions that will take you away from that intuition and its importance to you in your life.

These people have the capacity to be able to read the other, to be able to intuit at a very, very deep and profound level - penetrating people through intuition. In the nature of what intuition is, the 57th gate is perhaps the most acoustically sensitive gate in the whole bodygraph. Intuition is the reading of frequency or of the other's music, if you will. We all give off a frequency - the kind of frequency that we recognize in the maya, that is our voice, the tone of our voice, the speed, all of these things that go with that. But it is also the very frequency of our vibration, as we are all vibrating. The 57th gate is taking in that frequency. Basically after taking it in, the 57 is deciding whether or not that melody they're hearing is threatening or not that is its primary concern. These are people who have an instantaneous intuition for trouble. They can just hear it; they can intuit it.

Whenever you see the presence of the 54* in a profile, you always know that there is an unusual aspect in the incarnation. First of all the presence of the 54 in terms of its interpretation now, or its significance now, is that it is already a mutation. When we went from being a seven-centered to a nine-centered being in 1781, that transition also included the transformation of the 54. A real scholar of the traditional I 'Ching and somebody who has enough experience with the Rave I 'Ching will recognize that every single gate and line are exactly the same, except the 544. By the way, the thematic of them is exactly the same. The only difference is the 54 - it is a mutative line.

The nature of that mutation is in the understanding of what the Marrying Maiden is about. It is the beginning of the material chain, the beginning of the material hierarchy. This is the ground floor. In the language of the I 'Ching, this is the concubine that is going to rise up and ultimately become Empress. It is one of those nice number jokes that the 54 turns into the 45, if you turn it around. In other words, the other side of the concubine is the Empress. The other side of ambition is finally having territory and power. So the 54th gate is designed to attract attention to itself. Like its mirror the 19th gate, it is basically flirtatious, and that flirtation is to be recognized by higher forces that can help move it up through the hierarchical structure.

Now when you get to the 544 that is no longer mundane. In other words, this is about the opportunity or the possibility of being recognized by forces that are beyond what we deal with at any mundane level. There is no guarantee of that, but the fact is that it is an opportunity for transformation at a spiritual level. Two of the cross versions of the right angle, both the 1 /4 and the 2/4, are going to have the 54 as the grounding from the Design Earth. These are the kind of people that their intuition can actually get them to hear the voice of God, channel Seth, or whatever. There is a way of connecting to energy, however it is translated by the limitation of the mental experience; there is going to be a way to have a connection take place.

There are so many who have what it takes, and who do not make it. I had a friend of mine in Germany many years ago, an extraordinary musician with a wonderful voice, a really talented human being who desperately wanted to succeed as a professional musician - never made it. He was better than so many people that made it. He really was, there was no question about that. There was no question that he was better than 90% of the musicians in technique; his voice was magical. But he never made it.

The 32nd gate, as we have already seen in the previous two quarters, is always going to bring us certain basic dilemmas, because it is the only gate that carries the fear of failure. Given the nature of what we are as humans and the fact that we are designed to succeed and triumph, that failure for us is something that is really terrifying. Remember that failure, not the failure in the way that we think about it today, but the roots of failure, the roots of failure are in extinction fears - that is that the species will bе wiped out, because we don't have enough resources or skills or whatever. That fear goes back to our reptilian nature. It goes back a long way and is the most ancient fear that we have within us. After all, there were many, many species that were much more powerful than us, and the fear of extinction was something that was real for a very long time. It wasn't like we were always carrying Uzi's.

Here with the Cross of Maya, this is the way the maya gets you. It is so nice the way they orchestrate all of this. The maya gets you by making you horrendously afraid that you are going to disappear. Hell, you are going to die anyway, but of course this is not about logical. It is this deep, deep fear inside. When you see neurosis in this stream from the 54 going all the way up to the 26, what you see is people with bomb shelters with 8,000 tins of canned food. "We're going to be the last one, Harriett. We'll have our food." Fear of extinction - this is how the maya grabs us, which is really cute. It says, "Look you don't want to let go of this, do you?" It's true.

Intellectually, for a long time, I've heard all of this quite serious and pedantic put down of the maya. "The world of illusion" - like it is a bad thing. Give me a break; this is our world. We're not here to deny the maya - that's called death. That's not our job. We are here to embrace it fully and be aware of exactly what it is, because we can't escape our roles in the maya. These crosses tell you that; you come in with your little single piece, do your little zap of time, and then it is offstage.

I love the maya. People think that it is going to be good when they're dead - that is weird to me. What the hell are these crystals going to do, rub against each other and make electricity. There is nothing to do. There is no mind to contemplate all that. It is not like you're sitting out there going, "Gee, that was a good life." This is the movie; this is the great dream, it is our dream. We all make it up every day and keep it going. That is how we sustain the maya. So here holding on to the maya is serious business.

When you get to the third variation of the Right Angle Cross of the Maya, you get to one of those rare things - splenic seriousness. Emotional seriousness is a norm, but splenic seriousness is heavy duty, because this is about keeping the species alive. The fact that you have your individual little human life, you don't realize how deep that is inside of you.

The 32nd gate is about valuation. A 32 is looking for the right 54, and a 32 looking for a 54 is like a groom looking for a bride. That is why we have so much sex in the office place, because it gets confused. The 32nd gate is the financial manager in a business, as they have the capacity to recognize the value of something. If you want to know whether or not you're being ripped off on the price of a product, ask a 32. Not only will they tell you what the going prices are; they'll tell you what shops you can find them in, and what days to go to get the best discount on the subway as you're getting there. In other words, they really know the value of things.

If you really want to piss them off, tell them about a great sale. Then two days after they go and buy the thing, you tell them that the same thing is available on the Internet for $10 less. They won't talk to you for a month. Those things are very important, because valuation is important to them. Failure means that you don't have the right value. Many businesses go out of business, because they don't charge enough for their product. They just don't, because they think no one will buy it. What they don't realize is that in making it cheap, they are going to go broke anyway. They are not going to be able to cover their costs - proper evaluation is everything.

The 32 is looking at the 54, the ambitious one, and the 54 is keeping everything evolving. These are the ones that pull themselves up by their bootstraps. In that way, they bring a whole new experience when they get to the top. For the 32 to get value for themselves they have to have the right people working with them. Remember this is tribal; there is tribal orientation to this cross. They are always on the hunt for somebody else that can help them get real value and avoid failure. In the old days, we would call this apprenticeship - in other words, on this cross is where you get people that will bring others under their wing and train them.

The 32 will train them so that they ultimately surpass the 32, who won't mind that - that is its deepest grace. Both the 32 and its mirror, the 49, will allow something to pass over them. The 49 will accept things, because they know it will pass on to children. The 32 accepts that movement of the 54. because the 54 will allow the whole material process to continue. Not only that, but the 32 that helps that 54 get ahead will retain certain perks. The 34 reminds them, "Remember that it was me that recognized you and got you up there." The 54 is quick to reply, "Yes, I'll never forget that - here's your check and here's your place in the parking lot."

The 50th gate is called the Cauldron; it's a cooking pot. Everything about the tribe is rooted in food, everything. We come to the third variation of the Right Angle Cross of Laws. The Sun is in the 50th gate and literally gives this cross its name. This is the gate of the tribal lawgiver and the gate of values. This is where the rules are established for the tribe.

Rules for tribe operate on two things: one is food and the other is sex. It is the job of the 50th gate to establish the laws of food and sex in the tribe; it is its basic work. The laws of Moses, which are a classic example of early law, dealt very specifically with both of those subjects. Rules of food are not simply about what food, but include what you can and can't eat. Don't go into Baghdad and order pork; it isn't going to do you any good, and you could get into a lot of trouble. The fact of the matter is that the tribal rules are established about what we can eat, what we should eat, and who has right to the food, based on law, of course. In the early situation, if you were a male and fell asleep in the bushes while everybody else went hunting, chances are that you weren't going to get dinner. They had established food rules, i.e. what foods, when food can be eaten, when the food cannot be eaten; all of that is in the 50.

Rules about sex were also established here, some of which are pretty cruel - for example, any kind of circumcision, male or female. This is a classic example of 50n gate rule making that can be absolutely brutal in what it does. Nonetheless, they have control over that. It is the 50th gate that establishes when you are allowed to have sexual relationships, with whom, under what circumstances, and so forth and so on. It is the gate of the tribal lawmaker, after all.

With the Sun in the 50th gate, you have a focus on controlling the tribal environment. When you come in on the Cross of Laws with the 50th gate, you are there to establish rules in your life. You are also going to establish rules for others or you aren't going to have anything to do with them. As long as the rules are clear and everybody is behaving according to the rules, then of course these beings are very happy.

Every quarter we're given another variation of the sets of rules and values that we have to live by not because they are philosophical concepts, but because they are genetic code. In other words, they are simply there. This tribal force, they are the ones that are going to establish those rules. Remember the evolution of humanity ultimately is in hands of tribe; it is not anywhere else. Individuals are mutating all the time. The collective is open. The tribe is what is closed and is the bedrock of humanity, because it is still living out all this old programming. Most of the planet is still living in a dense tribal mode. Being part of Western culture, we tend to forget how deep the tribal life still is for most human beings on this planet.

There is a transition that takes place between the lawmakers of the right angle and the other two that follow. Right angle lawmakers don't know a hell of a lot about the consequences of their rules. The lawmaker that established female circumcise should only have a clitoris - they should see what that is really all about. Then we probably wouldn't have the same law, not unless they are really weird. So when you are dealing with right angle lawmaking, you must see that that is an inward process. They just like making rules. They like making rules and seeing that there are others that follow those rules, but it is not for the other.

The 28th gate has an unusual job in life. One of the first things that we learn in Design when we begin to look at circuitry is integration, that is the 20/10/57/34. Integration represents the most individualistic and most personal survivaloriented circuitry in the bodygraph. But the 28th gate has an extraordinary impact on integration. In human sexuality when we look at the themes of caring at the splenic side, we see that the 20/57 only cares for itself; that is all they are here for, just for themselves. But the moment there is a 28, or a 38, but particularly the 28, the 20/57 can no longer simply be selfish - it is not possible for them. They can no longer be only concerned about themselves - begrudgingly they will be concerned about the other.

With the Sun in the 28th gate, we have the third variation of the Right Angle Cross of the Unexpected. The unexpected brings four basic themes. It brings the unexpected, in the sense of a new experience popping up. Suddenly being thrust into positions of influence comes from the unexpected. Also the unexpected comes through in what these people with the 28th gate will have to care for and take responsibility for in their life.

Through the 28th gate, it is the unexpected that comes out of fundamental risk taking, which is the nature of this gate. The 28t gate is the fear of death and about whether or not life is going to have any value whatsoever. When you have the Sun in the 28th gate, there is nothing more important in life than that your life seems to have value. If it doesn't have value, what you get is struggle.

The 28th gate is pointing at the 38th gate, which is the gate of Opposition and the gate of the fighter. The 28 is looking for a good fight. "Let's have something worthwhile to struggle about." You see it is okay for them to struggle, but please let the struggle have some purpose. On this Cross of the Unexpected, these people are always caught up in the struggle; it is the theme of their life. If they surrender to the struggle, the unexpected is always a possibility to them, as that is the magic of this configuration. Busy about their own business, at any moment, in any way, something can simply jump up and surprise them. Of course, that is interesting, and this is not the configuration of a dull life. This is not going to be dull.

This brings us to the close of the quarter and the third variation of the Right Angle Cross of the Four Ways. It is in Coming to Meet, the 44th gate that the actual fear of extinction exists. That is its prime place, because this is the gate of the nose, the gate of smell. It is also a gate of deep instinctive memory, and it is this memory of the past that guides it. The fear of the past conditions what it will do in the now or in future - always.

When I say being conditioned by the past, remember that does not have to be one's immediate experience in one's own lifetime. There is just something deep in the genetic material; there is an uncertainty that is always there, causing one to wonder if the necessary resources for survival are there. The fulfillment of the 44 is to find the 26 and the ego power that allows for expansion of any material direction. Without that marketing/sales person in the 26, without that ego ready to exaggerate to the tribe, there is no way that anything is going to move. There is no way that they are going to be able to survive.

In the very beginning, long before there were businesses and sales people, the job of the 26 was to arouse the others to the hunt. They would go around saying, "Look, there is not a lot of food now. We've got to get to work. Come on, get up." They'd be running around saying, "Sharpen those spears." That was their job to get everybody ready for the hunt.

So when the 44 recognizes that they are the one that has the awareness; they have the fear, and are the ones that are attuned to whether there are enough resources or not, whether there is enough material coming in or not. But they know they need somebody who is going to get the hunt going, is going to bring the forces together. Of course, the way that we do that now is that the 26 sells things - that is the way of hunting, bringing in the revenue from the products that are marketed.

It is the 44th gate that is the personnel manager, as this is the gate of manipulation. Again that is not a word that carries any moralistic connotation; it is simply what it is - to be able to control people, to be able to control the ego and guide it with awareness. "Here's the product," says the 44. It is never the ego that decides the product in terms of the metaphor. It is always the 44 that is directing the ego power. With the Sun in the 44, this "way" is that materially we can only succeed by bonding with others.

The 44/26 is the same thing on the capitalist side, as the 40/37 is on the communal side - always important to keep that symmetry in mind. When you are looking at the 44/26 understand that it is a purely tribal mechanism at work. The 44 recognizes that success only will come if there is the power of marketing and that ego force at the other end. So that is what they look for in their life. That is their way of meeting the other.

This is the close of what is our sexual quarter or the male/ female quarter, if you will. In the nature of Coming to Meet at the close of this, there is the possibility that that role can be opened up to anyone. In other words, the Sun in the 44 is not going to care whether the manipulated is male or female. This is one of the places in which the sexuality that is in the mirror of the 40/37 gets lived out here. In the very beginning, this is what all business was as it was rooted in a sexual bond between partners, ma and pa businesses. Everything started off as a ma and pa; that is the way everything began.

This is the place where, "Okay, I'll bake the bread, Harry. You ride it into the village." "All right I'll plow the field, Harriet, but you put the seeds in." In other words, here you have the beginning of family enterprise. Now of course we have become blasé, because we live in an age in which family enterprise is something that just doesn't exist anymore. If you root for your favorite franchise in any kind of professional sport, you'll discover that it belongs to TimeWarner or somebody like that. When I was growing up, there was always some person that they would show you a picture of who had actually paid for the team and owned it. This kind of thing is disappearing. The business that is a family business is disappearing. All of those things are fading, but this was the root of it.

That is why we often have all of these dilemmas in our business life, our sexuality gets caught up it and it gets confusing, because originally that was all it was - just male and female working together. Out of that, obviously came many things. But this is the beginning of it. Now we are in a different place in the way in which our civilization operates. But some remnants of this are sitting there and causing confusion, because we end up with romances in the workplace. We end up with all kinds of bonds in the workplace that are following this pattern - when in fact that's not what it is about anymore.

In this Quarter of Mutation, we begin with the 1st hexagram, the Creative, and the fourth variation of the Right Angle Cross of the Sphinx. Remember the description of how these gates of the Sphinx work, through our vehicle - that the 2nd gate is the direction the vehicle is going in, but we have passengers in the vehicle. Those passengers are going to respond differently to the vehicle's movement. The 7th gate, the logical gate, is looking out the front window, looking ahead down the road, and wondering about where he is going. The 13t gate is looking in the rear view mirror, trying to figure out how far she has traveled and where she has come from. The 1s gate is in a brown study, which is when your eyes are unfocused, and you see nothing. Contemplating his navel as the car moves along, he is right there in the Now.

In being there in the Now, there is nothing more selfish, nothing more totally, totally selfish than the 1st gate, as it is only concerned about one thing - its naval. "Let me get my thing out. I want to express myself; I want to express my direction." So this Right Angle Cross of the Sphinx is not there to share with you, as this isn't a collective Sphinx saying, "Come over here and let me tell you where to go." Nor is it an abstract Sphinx saying to you, "Come over here and let me tell you where you've been." Instead you've got this individual Sphinx that says, "Get the hell out of my face. I don't care where you're going. I know where I am going." This is a very different kind of Sphinx, where the individual is absorbed in her own direction, and not concerned about the other.

After all, the 1st gate is looking towards the 8th gate, which is the gate of making a contribution. As the channel of the creative role model, the 8/1 is the creative expression out of individuality. That individual creative process, outside of influence, is what has the greatest mutative force. Thus, the chances are that the 1st gate Sphinx is not even going to tell you where you should go, even if he could, or even if he wanted to. He's not going to bother, even if he sees you falling down in your direction. It doesn't mean anything. The nature of the 1st gate Scorpion is that they are very unique, being the pure Scorpions. They are going to go very deep into their own process, no matter what pain that costs them. But don't get in their way. So this is a very different kind of Sphinx.

If you're in a plane crash in the jungle with one of these Sphinxes and see her take off - you follow. She isn't going to help you; she isn't going to wait for you; nor is she going to slow down because of you, but if you can keep up, you'll survive. A different kind of direction, a direction by example, which doesn't call attention to itself naturally, it doesn't say, "Hey look at me and what I am doing." You have to see that, to get that.

Now we come to our fourth variation of the Right Angle Cross of Explanation, the great cross of blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Being a 43/23 myself, I can take a little of that abuse. The 43rd gate of Breakthrough, of insight, of the inner ear, is the inner acoustic phenomena. As we have seen, explanation operates through the prime gates according to where the position of the Personality Sun. Thus, the 49 explanation explains why the revolution is necessary; the 4 explanation gives the answers to things; and the 23 is explanation where explanation is explanation itself. With the 43 we have is a reticent and often deep incapacity to be able to explain anything at all. Now it doesn't mean that they can't, but often that is the case.

When the Personality Sun is in the 43, the theme is one of individual insight and the individual inner acoustic phenomena. But, it is not about fulfilling it, even though the definition is there through the polarity of the 43/23. The whole thematic is simply on the insight itself. It is on the inner thought process itself.

Now imagine this person is about to have a very, very important encounter. In that 43 mind, she lives that encounter long before it ever takes place with all of its acoustic quality - what is said, what is not said, and what could be said. Those things are all played out at that level. When she gets to the encounter, she can't say anything. Oh, she might nod her head, and say yes to something or no to something. But all that stuff that she had inside that she was going to talk about, bring out, she can't express it.

Remember how difficult it is to turn the inner acoustic illusion in the 43rd gate, that inner insight, into actual language. This is translation. Having watched people translate my work over the years, I see it is no longer my work - it is a new work based on my work, but it is not the same. After all, it is another language with other roots to the quality and the sense of the words, as well as the basic mechanical formula in the sounds themselves. So this translating from the 43 to the 23 is a very difficult thing to do. It is why they are freaks after all - why this channel is called 'genius to freak.' Unable to explain yourself, you are a freak, but if you can explain yourself, you are considered to be very intelligent. These people give up on trying to explain themselves. But they know inside of themselves; they have this sense of truth and permanence, this sense of security and knowing.

There can be extraordinary things of great value locked inside that acoustic realm. It goes back to a basic formula for dealing with individual children, particularly the 43/23 children that are very common. Encouraging their capacity to articulate and explain themselves, you've got to get them to practice with their throat and getting things out. Ask them what is on their mind, get them to go through that process, because that makes it easier, easier, and easier for them to learn how to translate. It is like learning another language. At first when you are going to say something, you have to hear the other language in your head, and translate it in your head first. But when you speak the language long enough, it's just there, as the active translation is no longer taking place. Thus, it is very important that the 43/23 is given practice and nurtured.

But what happens is that their parents consider them to be an enormous pain in the ass, because they are always saying, "I know." At six years old when you say, "I know," and everybody knows that you are full of it, and don't know anything about what you're saying, "I know to," you end up with all that pressure. It makes it so difficult for these children. Instead, the only way that you can make things easier for them is to stimulate them to be verbal and to articulate.

I love this image in the traditional I 'Ching of the 14th gate, as a wagon. Since it is all about wealth and the accumulation of wealth, if you are born with the 14th gate that is like being born with an inheritance. You are given an abundance of energy, and the kind of energy that should be able to fulfill you at the material level.

That is why the very first thing that the 14th gate begins with is that 'Money isn't Everything, because money is guaranteed, and the material possibilities in life are at their richest when dealing with the 14th gate. That energy of the 14th gate fuels our direction in life. It is part of the channel of the Beat, the keeper of keys. With the Sun in the 14. we have the fourth variation of the Right Angle Cross of Contagion. This is all about looking for direction, looking for where to drive, since it is providing the fuel for direction.

The Design Sun in the 29 say, "Yes, I'll give you fuel for direction. Yes, I'll give you fuel for direction." There is only one thing about that; you can't give that fuel away, because people will just take it. Anytime you meet somebody with the Right Angle Cross of Contagion and their Sun in the 14th gate, there are all kinds of people in their life constantly trying to get them to commit themselves, make a promise, and provide energy that brings the benefits of that potential wealth.

With the right angle, the 1 / 4 and the 2/4 bring the 304, which is Burnout. One of the things about the Cross of Contagion, is that it carries Burnout as one of its dominant themes - the blind commitment to things and through that blind commitment, the eventual burning out. That burnout isn't about you burning out, falling down, and dropping dead. It is that your commitment to an experience, a person, a career burns out, and you have to leave it behind. But leaving it behind, one has a sense of failure, incompleteness, or that you wasted your energy with that commitment.

With the Sun in the 14th gate, our theme is being focused on finding the right direction. For these people that is what they are waiting for in life, waiting for those moments to make the commitment to the right direction in life. With the right direction comes the right fuel, and that means that is going to bring success to their life.

This is an enormously enriching gate. I went through a period of 31½ years where Pluto was activating the 14th gate in the 90s, connecting with my 2nd gate. That showed me the enormous power of that gate; what it fuels; and how much opportunity and wealth it can bring. After all, the success that I have today in Human Design is from that era, of Pluto being in the 14 gate, driving my energy, giving fuel for a certain direction to lay the foundation of the knowledge. So the 14th gate is always capable of providing us with a great deal. No matter what we look at though, it is always about entering into things correctly.

People carrying the Cross of Contagion bring other people together and amass their energy for direction. For example, they can get people to invest their resources, and that is quite something. They also can get other people to make commitments. By the way as a right angle, the way in which they do that is that those things fall into their life, possibilities jump into their life. It is not like they are looking for them, as they are very much absorbed in their own material needs.

With the 14th gate in your profile, if you don't pay attention to your security, have money in the bank, or have something reliable that you can feel good about financially, you're never going to be stable, never. One of the basic themes of the 14th gate is that if you don't assure your security, that it is not going to operate properly. As a very, very powerful source of energy, the 14th gate can be enormously destabilizing.

There is only one place of madness in Human Design and that is the 2 running to the 14, madness in the sense of taking the wrong direction, energy for the wrong direction in life. When I say madness, by the way, that is not a moral statement. It simply is about those people who go into a direction that is totally outside of what is acceptable to the vast majority of us.

Don't get in the way of these people. I hope that when the change comes, that somebody does something about slowing them down. The fourth variation of the Right Angle Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix is dominated by the 34/20 definition that is there, particularly when the Personality Sun is in the 34th gate. The 34th gate by its very nature because it fuels the whole integration, the 57, 10, and 20, by that alone, you have to recognize that it actually has more energy than any other gate of coming out of the sacral center. It actually puts out more juice than any other sacral gate.

This is the gate of power after all; it is the Power of the Great, which begins with the 341 the Bully. "Get out of my way, I'm busy." With the Sun in the 34th gate, that is something that they say over and over and over again in their life. "Don't bother me, I'm busy. Don't talk to me, I'm busy. Don't explain to me, I'm busy. I don't need you now as I'm busy. Stay away right now, I'm busy." This is their life, and because it is rooted in the 34th gate, there is power to back it up. They will literally push you out of the way, just plow you out of the way in order for them to continue with their busyness.

Being busy, it is so funny - life and sex. Being busy was all about being sexually attractive. That was what it was about. That one is busy, and because that one is busy, it means that they are going to be productive - at least that is the presumption. Out of that productivity is going to come resources that we are all going to get.

You can't get rid of the 59 sitting here in this cross, and you can't get rid of the fact that this cross has a sexual strategy as one of its themes. There is always going to be this sexual connotation in the work, because the 59 is going to operate out of that 34/20. Thus, these beings are being busy in order to attract somebody who is attracted to their busyness - that is their strategy. If you're a woman scantily dressed walking by a construction site, and the fourth variation of the Right Angle Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix is there, he's not going to whistle at you. Instead he's going to lift up the heaviest thing he can and carry it a long distance so you can see, to make sure that you get the picture. He'll try to ignore you as much as possible - he's busy.

Try to have a lover like that - whew, they're busy. You have to break into their busyness. You hear this all the time from people. "Well, never see her! I never see him - they're always busy." But of course that is what attracted them sexually in the first place - they like that busy. "Oh, that's sexy." It is charisma, after all. See we have forgotten the joke that being busy is one of the sexiest things we were given. It's true. That's why your mother said, "Don't marry a bum." Busy is very important. So when you have a cross like this, you can see that they really put that out. Of course, they show their machismo; they show their power; and if you want to have access to that power, you have to come get it - that's their strategy.

We come to the fourth variation of the Right Angle Cross of Planning, which is the global theme that we are currently in. There are only two gates that mention the small -the Preponderance of the Small, the 62nd gate, and the Taming Power of the Small, the 9t gate. All about detail, the 9 gate is a key to detail, looking after the small things. This is where the expression "a journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step" comes from. It is all about appreciating that aspect, if you give detail to the every small thing, then great things will grow naturally.

This is very important when it comes to planning. If you only listen to the 16 when it comes to planning, what you get is their enthusiasm for some architectural booboo. They just have their enthusiasm and just want to build something. "Give me some energy and I'llbuild something." If you listen to the planning of the 40/37 - they are going to give you very basic things. They are going to say, "Well look we need a shopping mall. We need a good school. We have to have a good sewage system." In other words, they are going to look at the practical things that impact on their tribal life - the quality of their neighborhood, those kinds of things.

But when you look at the planning that takes place in the 9 gate, that is very different. This is about accumulating the energy for detail, not about doing the detail work itself - accumulating the energy for detail. Since all the gates in the logic system are starved for energy, the 9tn gate is a fundraiser. It is trying to bring together the energy to actually get the detail work done. If you want to do research, but have a twelve-hour a day job, not much research is going to get done. But if somebody finances you, so you can replace your job and do your research, everything is going to be a delight. The 9th gate is always looking for the necessary energy to be able to support being focused and concentrated, to be able to support detail work. Without the resources, you can't do that.

Thus, this Cross of Planning is very important. Once it gets past the task of bring the necessary energy together, then it provides the continuing energy to focus on detail. Of course, planning benefits from detail, and here is the only place where you really have that sensibility. The tribe will ask for things it doesn't need. For example, in the last five years a couple of African nations have built enormous religious edifices that nobody wants. One of them, the largest in the world when it was built only three years ago, is now abandoned. Built in the home village of the leader, who was overthrown by coup, which is very poor, people are now coming and stripping things off the wall. In other words, the tribe will say we need this or that. It doesn't necessarily mean that is of value to the tribe or important, or the place to really put one's resources.

In dealing with the 9th gate, you really do have some sensibility in that. By the way, sensibility is one of the themes of the 9 gate. It's about getting to the point where you can say, "Okay, we have enough energy now that we can concentrate on the detail." In the old days, all that meant was that if you were trying to figure out how to build a new lodge, you couldn't be expected to hunt as well. In other words, somebody else had to take that responsibility. Since somebody else was providing the necessary resources, you were then allowed to eat, and could also produce something else. In other words, the energy was there for you to concentrate on the detail.

Those kinds of bargains are always going to be necessary, because planning never can be separated from the bargain of the 40/37- that is part of this cross configuration. A bargain is required to get to where there is enough energy to concentrate on the detail and really be able to get the planning out. Most people today in planning things have very, very little time for planning. Most people have to race into things, in order to try to find the resources, and thus are planning on the run. So we get computer programs that are betas; we get all kinds of things, in which the real planning was not fulfilled and completed, because there weren't enough resources to support it. This is a very important point for us in the way in which things work in this era that we are in now.

The magic of the 5th gate - in the 59 is the only line that tells you how to become enlightened. So you can take a look at that later. Really just follow the directions, have a can of soup afterwards, turn off the lights, and wait to see the glow come. The 5t gate of waiting - do you get it now? It's the enlightenment story. With the great gate of waiting, you don't do anything, just keep your mouth open, and the fish go in. It is very simple. Just float around there in your life. The 5th gate is universal, as it is part of the design of all forms, and is a fundamental aspect of life. It is the generative force at our very cellular level. It is actually the 5t gate that is changing, as you change by living out your design. It is the very pattern of your cells; it is the way in which your cellular memory is being stored - all of that is being changed and all of that works through the 5th gate.

Everything about the 5h gate is about the nature of pattern; not only the nature of pattern, but the recognition that we are in the pattern and cannot push the pattern. Only when we accept the pattern are we going to get what the 5 promises, which is inner peace. In dealing with the fourth variation of the Right Angle Cross of Consciousness, the first thing to recognize is that consciousness is in the pattern. These are people that have a deep recognition of patterns and are very, very important to us.

I went through life and never saw its coincidences until I came to Design and began working with patterns, with people's designs, with numbers, and all these things. The patterns, the repetition of the pattern, they are everywhere all the time every moment in everything that you see. Until you get to the point that it is, well it is just that it is the pattern. Then you get the joke, that you are the pattern looking at the pattern that is in the pattern. Then you just give up, and that is enlightenment. Then the river just moves, and everything is terrific.

It seems so absurd that people find that difficult. It is true the density of the mental plane. As long as you are holding on to that last gasp of authority - "But there must be something I can do." I've actually heard people say that to me. I reply, "Yeah, phewwwww go ahead! Do what you can." We're just in the pattern; there isn't anything else. Waiting has a deep, deep mystical potential in it. It just does. It is our glory, the moment that we can just wait. Let it happen. We are all waiting.

Remember that waiting is not stopping. Waiting in the flow of things, waiting in the flow of time, waiting in the flow and movement of life, waiting in the flow of mutation, we are still waiting. We are waiting for things to happen. Whatever your type is, whatever your nature, that is what you are here for - open your mouth, float downstream, and sooner or later something is going to pop in. It is the way that it works, for when you live out your type and the experiment of that, you begin to recognize its truth - things just simply appear for you, and you don't have to look for them, and you don't have to suffer in looking for them.

That possibility is here in this cross, as these beings have the opportunity, in their very consciousness of the pattern. In their ability in this incarnation to see the patterns, to grasp, perhaps, that they're a pattern too. It is so funny, when you look out of your eyes, you don't see your face - you don't see that you are a pattern too. You're just looking at all of the other patterns, and suddenly there is this incredible moment in the mirror where you begin to realize, "Oh, my God, I'm one of them too."

We come to the Right Angle Cross of bullshit, no - this is the Right Angle Cross of Rulership. When you have the Sun in the 26th gate, that first title is pretty close. This is rulership by exaggeration, by marketing, and it is very modern in that context. In other words, it is really about marketing yourself as a leader. So you take some wimp like George W. and you turn him into presidential caliber. I love that, all you have to do is look at this man's face - you look at that face and say, "Oh good marketing, good marketing." Sixty-nine million dollars later, "Very good marketing." This is the marketing of rulership with a tribal slant. "No I don't see anything wrong with the Confederate flag." They go right for the tribe.

This is not the 45- remember 45 rulers always have their nose in the air. It is one of the things to understand about instinct and smell. Everybody in that streams smells except the 45. The 45 can't stand the smell; they have their nose in the air. The 26 isn't like that at all, as they're out there shaking hands, and giving everybody their personal scent. They are right there, and what they are saying is, " I'm one of you." George W. Bush - "I'm not part of the establishment, I'm one of you." Only the 26 can lie that way; only they will tell you that they are one of you. But really they are not one of you, and they will never be one of you. He's Kennebunkport, he's never going to be one of the ordinary Americans - he's not tribal. However, this is marketing.

This is a different kind of rulership, not the rulership of grace, the 22, where you are really open to the concerns and the needs of the people. This is not the 47 rulership saying, "My people are oppressed. I have to do more for them. I have to help the." Not the 45 saying, "I'm the natural ruler. I'll take taxes from them and keep them poor, but at least I will educate them, so that maybe tomorrow they'll do better."

This is the 26 saying, "I want to be in power. I'm here to be in power. Let's get there." That's it, and then they have to learn on the job. Those other aspects of the cross are there, so it is not like they are alienated from those other aspects of rulership. However, their way of getting to rulership is through the ego - through claiming they have a right to rule and by exaggerating about what they will bring you when they get there. They will market that like a commodity.

This is where we get politics as a commodity. These beings are selling themselves to the people by selling them their promises. That is what the ego does, it makes promises. So this is a true ego ruler making those promises. Obviously because rulership is just that, it is one of the ingredients that we get as rulership. It's not whether that is good or bad compared to the others, it is just another variation.

With the 11th gate, we come to the fourth variation of the Right Angle Cross of Eden. In this movement through the wheel, we've seen that with the right angle there are four variations. Notice that the third variation of the Right Angle Cross of Eden moved into the second variation of the Left Angle Cross of the Plane. Now there are only two variation of a left angle cross. Here the fourth variation of the Right angle Cross of Eden moves into the second variation of the Left Angle Cross of Education. So these two left angles have a different design. In other words, the different variations of the Cross of Eden naturally lead into different things. One Cross of Eden will lead into going into the depth of the plane to be in the world. But here another variation brings us to the Cross of Education, which has a totally different kind of development, but is out of the same root. The work of the left angle is to express the variations that are lived out by the right angle. In other words, the left angle is always doing the publicity for the right angle's life. It is the way that it simply works.

So here we start with the Sun in the 11th gate. Remember the nature of the Cross of Eden is that when you come into this life, your ease is immediately taken away from you that's basically what it is. Whatever ease happens to be there, for example your family might have a certain level of wealth, and all of a sudden it diminishes or whatever. But there is always this coming into the world, but leaving something behind. The 11th gate of Peace, the gate of ideas is one of the prime teaching gates that we have. The 11th gate and the 17n gate, these two collective gates, have the strongest capacity to be able to educate covering the largest possible spectrum. In the collective school both the tribal students and individuals are permitted. In other the words, the collective can cover that whole parameter. This gate of ideas is also the root of philosophy and history.

People carrying the Right Angle Cross of Eden are always philosophizing about how tough it is to be in world. They are really great educators in that they remind you what the density of the world actually is, though they can tend to be pessimistic. The abstract mind has a deep, deep connection to the way in which the emotional system operates. For example, if you look at the abstract voice out of the 56th gate, it is a voice that is either hopeful or not. Now that hopefulness or not, that voice of hope or despair, is a mirror of the emotional system itself and the emotional wave moving from hope to pain. The abstract idea, the same idea, can come out as hopeful and it can come out as despair - the very same idea.

With the Sun in the 11th gate, they are going to have their philosophy about the density of the world, their ideas about it. Some of them are going to be very heavy, full of despair - being in a body is a horrible thing, having to survive is a horrible thing, and so forth and so on. Also there will be those who philosophically tell you the other side - what it is like to be in form, and what is necessary for us in being in form. This is an aspect of education about what it's like to be in world. The abstract is always recording our history - that's its job. Forced to have experience after experience after experience in order to collect history, and out of that history it develops its perception and philosophical concepts. Remember how dangerous that can be - these are just ideas, but we have already seen that ideas themselves can overwhelm, and then of course in the end be very disappointing.

Now we come to the center of this quarter and the Vessel of Love with the fourth variation of the Right Angle Cross of the Vessel. In this case, we have the Sun in the 10th gate in the 1st line. The 10th gate is an enormously complex gate. Any gates connected with the integration circuit, because they are involved in so many more processes, are more complex. In the illustration of the vessel when we began, the 10t gate was described as the lip of the vessel, out of which the life flows, out of which the blood flows.

The 10th gate is the potential to love the way. It is why it has its natural rooting coming out of Eden, coming out of those variations. Because you see to love yourself, before you can love yourself, you have to love being in the world and love being in your body - you have to love those things first. Then you can find love for yourself. If you are resisting the way, what it is to be in the world, then you will never have the behavior that is necessary for you, or the behavior that allows you to find self-love.

Now one of the jokes, is that we are designed to find self-love through our ability to be able to survive in the Now. In other words, the joke is, you're alive right now in the Now, so why aren't you loving yourself? Because you see that is where self-love was rooted from the beginning - it was "I can stay alive," and that is an enormous accomplishment. After all, if you think about all the life forms that are here on this planet, we do really well. We really stick around. This is what it's all about "I can survive." This gives us our strength.

Out of the 10t gate we have all these different variations of behavior, so this is a behavioral cross. What you notice the most about these people in life is their behavior. If you meet the 10¹- you will notice that you never see them; they seem to there, and not. If you have the 10, everyone knows you're hiding. That is your behavior - "Oh, yeah, they're hiding up there somewhere." They just know.

In your formal training in Design, the difference between these two crosses in the G center is really stressed - that is you have the Cross of the Vessel of Love, which is about love, and the Cross of the Sphinx, which is about direction. But you can't separate those themes; that is, the gates of love bring you a direction of love. That is very important to understand. In other words, it's moving you in a direction of a type of love. In the same way, the Sphinx itself brings you to love, if you allow that direction, by entering into that direction as yourself. The 10th gate provides more direction than just about any other gate, because it provides behavioral direction. I found that in working with gays, how often it is that they have a defined G through the 10th gate, either with the 3rd or 5th line - so they create a new direction for love, because that's the capacity. So one of the things about these beings is that when they come in, they are moving you.

Looking at the harmonic gate to the position of the Personality Sun shows the fulfillment of the cross. But look how complex that is for this cross. In order to fulfill itself, it has to find the 20. meaning it has to be awake in the Now. It has to find the 57, to find the awareness to allow it to survive in the Now; and it is looking for the 34 because it needs the power to follow its convictions to be an archetype that can penetrate in the Now - all of those things. In looking for all of that, it is seeking out a very, very individual process.

You will notice people that have the Sun in the 10th gate of the Cross of the Vessel of Love don't give off the same "vessel" feeling. Oh yeah, it's there, you know its there - they are always the kind of beings that you can take in your arms. But it is not that, they are pointed towards something very, very individual, and it means that their focus is on their own life and their own behavior. They are actually searching for self-love by trying to become a pure individual.

With the Sun in the 58th gate, we have the fourth variation of the Right Angle Cross of Service. We are retaining the Design 18 and 17, which is always going to be critical and judgmental. But remember we need that. After all, without criticism and judgment, we aren't going to have challenge of patterns. Then we going to end up being suckered into patterns that may in fact not be valid, and be detrimental to us. As much as it can be annoying at times to deal with argumentation and all of that; the challenge that is there is absolutely essential.

It is one of the things I have come to appreciate about the logical process because having the patterns challenged has honed me as a teacher. If you can't deal with that, as Truman said, "Get out of the kitchen." If you can't deal with logical people, you've really got a problem in this life. It doesn't mean that you have to like them, but the fact of the matter is it is the most important aspect of our circuitry, in terms of whether or not we are going to be able to survive together. It is essential that we have common understanding of patterns, and they enforce that on us, as they are the ones that always insist on knowing what the pattern is about, whereas other people are quite ready to accept the pattern. "Oh, well that's the way the pattern is." But it's the logical one that says, "Wait a minute, wait a minute, don't jump so fast. Let's see if that is really what the pattern is." So that is a valuable service that they bring. Keep that in mind.

Remember logic is starved for energy. Here with the 58 and the 52, you have a polarity of two root center gates that are prime energy gates for the logical process. There is real beauty in the 58' Love of Life, but these people can be really gaga, having this kind of hippiedippie, blissed-out quality. Go to a wedding in the 60s, you're going to meet these people, or at least their clones. There is this sense that everything is "Ahhhh." Now that doesn't mean that underneath that they aren't complaining about something. You can't get away from that with the 18/17. However, they have all this wonderful energy for "Life's terrific, let's just be there." Now I'm only describing the 58(1).

The whole thing about the Sun in the 58 is that they are the most sought after energies. Nobody infuriates the collective more than the 582, this line of Perversion, because they give their energy to things that make the collective squirm. Starved for energy, logic wants that energy for basic challenges to basic patterns. Then you get a 58 who is trying to figure out the relationship between curves on the head and life patterns - they're investing all of their energy in that. There are all of these other logical collective people standing around saying, "Pervert." As the energy font for the logical process, these people are always being asked to be of service, but they are not offering their service.

With the Personality Sun position in the 58th gate, it is looking at the 18th gate for "Where can I put my energy and what correction, what challenge can I put my energy to." That is what they are looking for. What they get is all kinds of people asking for their energy to participate in a logical process. Since they are in the logical circuitry, they're never going to be able to get involved unless they can identify with the process. If the 58 can't identify with what the thing is going to be, it is not going to work. Designed to be the theme of mastery in life, logic, through the 5 and the 15, is there to repeat things over and over, and over and over again, correcting as you go along, until you finally reach mastery. So if there is no identification, you can't stay long enough. In other words, you are not going to become a musician because it is the flavor of the month, as it isn't going to work. There is no sense dedicating energy by buying a guitar, saxophone, or whatever, spending a month practicing, and walking away from it, because you are not really identified with what it can bе in the future. Logic is about the future, about perfecting patterns, as you get into the future.

So it's not an easy thing to come up to this variation of the Cross of Service and say, "We need you." First you have to get them identified with it, and then you can get access to their energy. Of course, if you are the one on this cross, you can only enter into something when you enter it correctly, according to your type and authority. Then you are going to find something that you can dedicate yourself to. So many logical people, who have never been dedicated to anything, and most of that is because of type - generators trying to be manifestors, projectors trying to be manifestors, reflectors trying to manifestors, and manifestors trying to be anything other than manifestors, but nobody being what they are.

With the Sun in the 38th gate, we have the fourth variation of the Right Angle Cross of Tension. In looking at the different variations, we can see where the tension is in each. The tension is focused in the 21, when the Personality Sun is in the 21, so the tension is focused on being in control. When it is in the 48th gate, the tension is on having enough depth and being able to get that depth out. The tension, with the Personality Sun in the 39th gate, it is all about finding the right spirit. Here in the 38th gate, it is about finding purpose. The deepest suffering is in this variation of the Right Angle Cross of Tension, as finding purpose is not an easy thing.

The 38, Opposition, the gate of the Fighter, is always ready to open itself up to the struggle, and always looking for something worthwhile to struggle about. Individuality recognizes that life is a bitch, that it is hard, that you do have to work at it, and it is by its very nature a struggle. Carrying that as a theme, these are the ones that show us that the struggle is something that we all have to deal with, and that struggle gives us our purpose. Out of the struggle, we can finally find something worthwhile.

Because of the individuality of the 38h gate, this is a deeply melancholic cross. These people can be very, very sad, because for them life doesn't seem to have a purpose. The only cure for that and the only healing for that is people living out their design. There are things worth struggling for, but you have to be able to know which ones. Since the 38th gate is deaf and not listening, it is just yearning. It doesn't really want to be influenced, because it is individual. It would just like to have some purpose in its life, please. Of course, because of that there is this deep sadness that can penetrate them. But remember that is the muse - this can be a deeply creative cross.

As always, when dealing with the Cross of Tension, these people need to have their bodies worked on. It is very important for them that they have others that can help them relieve the tension in their body. Yet at the same time, the only way to get rid of the tension in their lives is for them to have something worthwhile to do in this life - that is all they ask for. Of course, living out their design, they can get that. The Cross of Tension is deeply punishing if you are ignorant, because it doesn't let go of your body. It creates enormous tension in the body, and these are people that have shoulders that endlessly ache. They simply have all kinds of tension. Working on their body is not a cure. As long as they are unaware, it is not a cure. Oh, yes, they need it, and it will help them. A child like this is going to have the kinds of aches and pains that will make you think that there is something really wrong with them. Of course, there isn't, it's simply this configuration. It is about opening them up and offering them things that are worthwhile.As always, when dealing with the Cross of Tension, these people need to have their bodies worked on. It is very important for them that they have others that can help them relieve the tension in their body. Yet at the same time, the only way to get rid of the tension in their lives is for them to have something worthwhile to do in this life - that is all they ask for. Of course, living out their design, they can get that. The Cross of Tension is deeply punishing if you are ignorant, because it doesn't let go of your body. With the Personality Sun in the 54th gate, we have the fourth variation of the Right Angle Cross of Penetration. The 54, The Marrying Maiden, is the gate of ambition, of rising up. The way in which the bottom moves towards the top of the hierarchy is that the lowest rung of the ladder, whether that is the 54 or the 19, gets the most attention. In other words, there are always opportunities for those at the beginning of any process to rise up. The gift of the 54 and the 19 is their capacity to be able to get other people to notice them.

Now in the case of the 19, we call this flirtation, because the 19 is looking to see who is going to be interested in them. Out of that, they try to assess which of the interested parties is going to be able to provide the best resources, which one is going to be the most valuable. When you come over to the 54 it is the same theme, but different, because the 54 is oriented towards capitalism and the material side - we call this ambition. However, that drive is the same as the flirtation. The 54 is looking for somebody higher up in the hierarchy to notice them, and in getting noticed, they'll get their opportunity. Remember that it's personal, this is the tribe after all. It is very much like the archetype of the child wanting the parent's recognition, "Notice me, notice me. If you notice me you will see that I'm worthy."

The 54 is looking toward the 32, and the gift of the 32 is valuation. The 32's job, while sitting up there on the catwalk looking down on the shop floor, is to be able to recognize what person on that floor could one day be the foreman. They are always looking for that, and it is the 54 that gets noticed. Ambition has a bad reputation, because we give it a moralistic connotation. But in this country anyway, ambition is something that everybody is suppose to have. If you don't have ambition, you've got a problem. So let's not talk about the generalizations, let's see it simply for what it is.

This method of moving through the hierarchy says, because of the way the maya works, "It looks like everybody has a fair chance." That is very important, as the concubine can become Empress. Now all concubines don't become Empresses. But it is an old story. That movie, Pretty Woman, from a few years ago about the prostitute that ends up with this rich guy - same story- concubine that becomes Empress. It is a theme that is there to move us, and we get these examples of it - rags to riches; Bill Gates, the geek who now has all this money. That is the ambition you find in the Marrying Maiden, that we do have this potential. America is a Marrying Maiden nation; it's all about that. Seeing that everybody here has a chance to be president, grow up and own your own corporation, or whatever the case may be - the Holy Mountain, The Golden Mountain, America.

With the Personality Sun in the 54, the whole theme is about getting recognized, and these are the most recognized people of all, and that can create problems. You've been on the job for two weeks, and suddenly get elevated above somebody who's been there for three years - simply because there is a connection between you and the next person up in the hierarchy, and out of that comes your opportunity. The moment that 54 is recognized is the moment that its opportunities begin.

It becomes unique when you have the Personality Sun in the 54, either at the end of the right angle in the 4 /6 configuration, or in the juxtaposition. The 544 is a mystical, mutative line that is about so called enlightenment/endarkenment, which means there is the possibility of recognition by forces beyond what is the norm. By the way, that doesn't mean you know. But it does mean, chances are, something is watching; there is often something hanging around their shoulder. Generally they don't really know it's there, but some of them do. There is no guarantee in the activation of this line, that you are going to experience any of that.

It is still going to operate on the mundane level. The difference is that the 54 has a gift of ingratiating itself with others. So not only is it open to a mystical kind of recognition, but it gets a lot of recognition from its peers, simply because of the power of the 4tn line itself. With this Cross of Penetration, recognize the strength just in that word itself, to see how deeply they penetrate the other, and how deeply they can get recognition.

By the way, the fact that you get noticed doesn't necessarily mean that is positive. I know a lot of 54 s and yes, you notice them, but some of them you don't want to notice at all. It will depend on what your fractal is; it will depend on your design; it will depend on many things to see who actually is going to be recognizing them. It is not universal. The other thing is that you can be recognized and it can be considered a negative. There is everybody on the shop floor, but there is this one person standing out because she's doing things slightly differently; she may be doing things faster, for example. That is not necessarily healthy. The rest of the employees don't like the fact that she's been noticed for doing it quicker. She may go out into the parking lot and get quite a tongue lashing from those that are working with her. "Hey, wait a minute - what do you think you're doing - brown-nosing your way up?"

Here we are dealing with the fourth variation of the Right Angle Cross of Laws. You can very clearly see how our genetic system is structured, and the components that are absolutely necessary. When we look at civilization, particularly if you look at if from my perspective, what you see is all of these lines that are drawn in the sand. It is so obvious that those lines in a sense are arbitrary, that is if there is no morality, if everything is okay. Then those lines are a kind of maya game - to split this and to split that.

But we need to have our rules. There are rules within our body, and the moment those rules are broken, you become very ill. So there are rules, basic laws, and those things need to be part of the world. However, we've also seen, because of the nature of the hexagram's structure, that laws themselves are not rigid. Now they can be rigid, in terms of a human lifetime, but they are in fact flexible and will change over time. The impact of the juxtaposition and the left angle transforms the laws, and corrupt the laws out of the 4th line, which changes them in order to be more in line with current values and more concerned about the caring for others.

In this variation, the 60 gate is looking towards the 3 gate, Difficulty at the Beginning, the gate of confusion, but in fact the completion of the mutative process. There is a mystical circuit within us that is called the Wa and involves many gates. Two of those gates are the 60 and the 3. In terms of their keynotes, the 60th gate always represents the old, and the 3rd gate always represents the new. Genetic mutation moves through humanity in terms of our birthing cycle. Genetic information out of the 60 includes old established genetic information, such as early genetic information, all the mainstay of building our forms, etc. You also get recessive genes, genetic material that may be out of the loop for a century or so, or two or three generations, can suddenly pop up. The limitation in the 60th gate is saying, "This is what is. This is the old." It isn't saying, "This is mutation, and we're bringing you something new." That only comes when the 3 gate is there.

What that means in terms of the law is that through the 60t gate you get all the old laws, ancient laws of limitation, basic laws. Now that doesn't mean that those basic laws are of value to us now. It doesn't. But it does say that out of the 60th gate you're always going to have the traditionalist. In other words, basic traditional laws: thou shall not kill, for example, which is everywhere. Love thy neighbor - which you can find in every holy book you'll ever look in. These are basic kinds of rules for living with the other.

However, you are going to have things, like for example, for most of the time we've been building civilization, let's say the last 7,000 years, for most of that time we've used horses. So there are laws on the books in the city of Montreal, where I grew up, that say you have to tie your horse up in town. It was a law that was still on the books in the 60s. Now of course, that was a traditional law - it was based on traditions, it is an old limitation. You didn't want the horses running around wild, so you made sure they were tied up. In any of the law books in this country, or in any of the communities here, there are still laws on the books that have nothing to do with our way of life - nothing whatsoever to do with our way of life. But these traditional laws are still hanging around, and it is the 60tn gate that keeps these laws alive.

This Cross of Laws is all about all these old limitations and maintaining all of those traditions. Often this becomes attached to religion and becomes dogmatic. The traditionalist find that they can no longer be comfortable in modern society, because it is changing so quickly. So they take their traditionalism and bring that into the religious environment, where those traditions, and ancient laws are still being honored. Thus, these are often the people who will confuse temporal laws with spiritual laws - they'll use the Koran as a basis for lawgiving, or the Bible as a basis of science. In other words, they can get really weird, at least from any modernist point of view. But remember that they are essential.

Think about your own body and the cells in your body and what they do. There are cells that have different responsibilities than others. The cell that is involved with the muscle in your shoulder is different than the cell that is involved with the process in your brain. There is a hierarchy wherever you look. We can't eliminate all the traditional laws. They are still out there, less and less over time, but we still have them in pockets. Eventually we will put them in zoos - for example, the little New Guinea tribal people will be put in a zoo over there. Then we'll have these places where you can go and visit the old laws and traditions. But you see we have to maintain them, because we have the same hierarchy in our physical body.

If you take away the traditional laws in the world, we'll all die. It is a very funny thought - not that that is possible, but nonetheless. It is very important that whatever we are seeing on the outside - relates to the inside. I'm trying to give you a relatively universal description of a genetic code here. Each one of these examples that I'm giving you is part of the matrix that holds the world together, literally. So we cannot be without all of those traditions. People get very excited about Design and its future, but I always tell them the same thing. If we get to the end and if half the people know themselves - that's a triumph. Because you cannot get rid of all that other stuff, because you have cells in your toe that are living by old laws. In your brain that is changing, there are many, many different things that are at work within the structure that are out there in the world around us.

This it is very important to see the nature of this limitation. It is telling us a lot of things. Just because it seems like the appendix doesn't do anything, it doesn't mean that we can get rid of it. In other words, it doesn't just suddenly disappear. Thus, we have to hold on to certain things from the past, certain traditions and laws from the past, not because they are acceptable now, not because we need them now, but the totality has to maintain them, because it has to deal with all the aspects of the body.

Try to see this mystically for a moment. The Voice told me that if we could put all the crystals of consciousness in our Solar System, particularly here on Earth, together we'd have the design crystal of the whole. So think about that. That means that ultimately this design crystal, that is the whole, is operating the physical body of the whole. That is why I say to you, "It is my body." Why Jesus said, "It's his body." It's our body.

Imagine us as a fetus in the womb, and we're slowly coming to grips with our body. We are discovering that body. In discovering that body, you have to understand that the galaxy cluster that is 3 trillion light years away has a function 1 within this body in the same way that a cell has in your shinbone. It has to be communicated with - that's what the design crystal is doing. It shows the arrogance of humanity and their deep vanity that when I introduce them to the neutrino field, all they can think about is it coming in, instead of what happens when it goes through and goes back out.

The neutrino stream that moves through our bodies, that we are filtering with our collective consciousness and awareness, is traveling at near the speed of light. The range of the universe that my spirit, my living consciousness has touched in my lifetime is over 50 light years in every single direction. That is true for all of us. The information that moves through us is traveling at nearly 170,000 mph. When I laugh at Zeus, within seconds, he's got the buzz. It is just pouring through. We are communicating with our body - that is what we are doing.

Life has been on this planet for approximately 2 billion years; some say even 4 billion. If you think about the neutrinos going through the life on this planet for 2 billion years, it means that that information has traveled several billion light years in space. If you stretch that out on either side, it is about half the size of the whole universe. Life on this planet has been programming the whole universe for billions of years. Slowly we are becoming conscious of that. There will be a time, and not in this form, in which we actually manipulate our body, because it is our body. Now we are just becoming conscious of it.

So when you are looking at this limitation, there is something deep and mystical in this. It is part of this truly profoundly mystical circuit. What it is really saying to us is "That within us is everything and that we can't get rid of those things, because they no longer have a place." It means that we have to find room for them, and let them be, because you see they're programming another level somewhere else out there. It is very important to grasp that we're programming agents.

We're all caught up in "Oh, it's the program." Yeah, I know it's the program, but you see the program works through us. It works through us. That is why it is so beautiful when we do our Dream Rave work and see there is a time in which our personal vanity isn't involved in our contribution to the whole - we can filter the neutrino field cleanly. When we come into our waking consciousness, because we do not live out our nature, how distorted all of that is. Think of the vibration that we put out, second by second now on this planet to the whole without morality, just to see it for what it is. After all, it is a developmental process, and we're at the most primitive, primitive stage of our development. It is like the foolish question of "What is God?" How can you know what made you when you are in the womb? I can't knock on that belly and say, "Hey, it's me God, I made you." Give me a break. We don't know what made us. We've got enough trouble staying alive. We're inside and we're evolving inside. So regardless of what we think the future is, regardless of where our dreams happen to be, all of these old elements from the past, it's not about getting rid of them. It's not about the morality that they are no longer of value.

That brings us to the 41 and the fourth variation of the Right Angle Cross of the Unexpected. The Personality Sun in the 41 is always telling you that this is the beginning of something. This is an initiating cross, because the 41st gate is the only gate in our biology that is connected to the start codon in genetics. What that means is that it begins at the genetic level, it begins all genetic processes. So in fact the 41st gate is the initiating codon or the starting hexagram for all processes. In my neutrino forecast, I talk about the fact that when the Sun is in 41, that is really when the new year begins in January. This is really the initiating of a cycle. So here this variation of the Right Angle Cross of the Unexpected brings new experience as a theme. They are very important to the collective abstract, as they are the ones that are likely to find a new experience out of an old experience. In other words, they unexpectedly can see an advantage in some kind of experience that others can't see. They also meet the unexpected experience in their life. With the Personality Sun in the 41st gate, it is going to initiate an unexpected experience that is going to involve the other.

Everything about the collective is about sharing, and this Cross of the Unexpected is actually rooted in the 31s gate, because things unexpectedly show up and are influential. The great metaphor of this is being thrust into positions of influence, unexpectedly. Yet, here in this variation, it is really about starting a whole new experience, and in most cases initiating that in others. This is a cross of trend setting, and those trends are going to be reflected out of the arms of the cross - trends in caring, in finding purpose (a lot of spiritual nonsense can go with this), in leadership. In the political press, they are always talking about styles of leadership, about how politicians work on their style - different trends in the way in which you deal with the people.

Here in the 41st gate, the unexpected experience is going to emerge, and out of that unexpected experience we have the deepest cross of expectation. You'll see that the basic danger in this expectation, what that leads to when you get to the juxtaposition, because you end up with a cross of pure fantasy. Now there is nothing wrong with pure fantasy. But the thing to recognize is that with every expectation that is not fulfilled, a scar is placed on your spirit. No matter how stoical you are in going through that, over and over and over again, all those scars add up.

Very important things happen in the way we get conditioned by the emergence through this cross. I told you how Pluto, Uranus, and Neptune were discovered with this cross being active. That is not simply the serendipity of that relationship, but it is also about understanding that up until that time those three planets did not have any conscious impact on us. Oh yeah, they were filtering us, but we were not ready to be able to take in the program that they were filtering. The fact of the matter is that the unexpected doesn't simply bring the unexpected that is a surprise, but what it brings is the possibility of a new kind of programming. So new experience can possibly generate a new kind of programming. But you don't know where that is going to lead, that's the human way. It is just opening up a new experience. BooBoo and BaaBaa carve out a log and realize suddenly as they push it into the water that it floats. GooGoo and GaaGaa have the unexpected, they have something really unexpected. They don't know where that is going to lead them. Now they can have all kinds of expectations about what is going to happen, when they sit in that log. Now if they have an expectation that they are going to be able to find China and the spice realm, whatever the case may be, on and on - the danger here is in the expectation. With the 41 pointed towards the 30th gate, you're moving towards the gate of feelings, the gate of desire as an emotional field, which means that desire is going to bring you hope and pain, no matter what happens. So this new experience brings this hopefulness. "Oh this is great. Let's get in." Of course, they get in and it's a tippy canoe. You can reach the point of burnout in that the 41 is pointed at a resonance with the 304 - the expectation itself can burn you out.

The Cross of the Unexpected is basically Moses - that is you can see the Promised Land, because you see it first, but it doesn't mean you're allowed to enter. The Alpha gets to enter, as it is the left angle. In two of the other variations of the Cross of the Unexpected, the left angle was about alignment - taking advantage of the unexpected, finding that alignment, and riding it. But here the left angle takes advantage of the unexpected to become the actual leader - to become the Alpha, who guides others, even though they are not the ones that see it first. This is one of the frustrations of the Cross of the Unexpected, as they are attuned to phenomena before others, but it doesn't mean that they can go into that phenomena. It doesn't mean that they can enter in or take advantage of the experience. The moment the experience is there they get caught up in the expectation.

We made it to the last hexagram and the fourth variation of the Right Angle Cross of the Four Ways. This is the way of Approach, and it's the way of need. As the path of neediness, it says something very basic about humanity - we need food, we need those whose principles we can live by to share our lives with, and we need God, that is we need something that will touch us at the spiritual level. All of that is rooted in the 19, which is a tribal adrenaline gate. Because it is coming out of the adrenal system, we know that it is accompanied as a pressure, as a stress. This is the most stressful of the way, and for those that carry the Sun in the 19th gate, their deepest stress in the modern world is to have enough food to eat. We represent a minority on the planet of those that are abundantly fed. This is a major question on the planet and a major point of survival for at least half of us in this world. So this is a very dynamic theme, and it means that there is an enormous pressure here.

In the modern geopolitical environment, some of the most savage revolutions that are taking place are religious, fundamentalist revolutions to provide people with food. Several years ago in Turkey, they elected a socialist mayor in Ankara, something that never happened before. With that election, they had somebody that was just making sure that people had food, but that caused enormous tension, because he was part of a religious party. Because of that, he was banned immediately and thrown out of office, because the religious party was banned.

There is a deep connection in the 19/49 to our spiritual, religious life. Thus, the spiritual world has a deep connection with providing us with food. We have to be very careful in our neediness that we don't end up in situations where we are all being ruled by theocracies that tell us what to eat and when to eat, but promise all of us something to eat. So this 19th gate, right now in the world, is feeding revolution. That is what it is looking for; it is looking at the 49th gate, and it is ready to either accept its lot in the world or not. The fact is that one of the forces that can motivate it to become revolutionary are spiritual forces. They say, "You have a God-given right to this and this and this. Only we can protect you and look after you." This is one of the most dynamic themes of this cross - filling up the refrigerators of world, and creating enough refrigerators, electricity, infrastructures, and everything else necessary to make sure that other people have basic resources, food resources, Until we solve this problem, this way is under enormous tension.

With the 33, we all needed to build a house and have shelter. The first step to individual freedom and individual human rights is to have your own territory, your own space. The 19th gate is deeply territorial. We have found a way through the 44 to work with others, in order to provide us with material. Certainly in the last 400-500 years, we have seen that knowing itself is something that can support us. We now live in an age where intellectual property has real value and an educated human being is more valued than ever before in the history of humanity. So those are things that we are dealing with rather well.

But it is the19 where we've got a real problem. The 19 is the question of food and until there is enough food for everyone, we're not going to be able to move on. We're not. When I tell you that we are going to have an enormous population decrease, that's great - it's not nice for those that aren't going to make it, those that are going to die, but it is going to be much easier to supply resources to 3 billion people instead of 12 billion. We're headed towards 12 billion, based on the way it is moving now, and the way it can be documented. Now that change is going to come which will help a lot in dealing with this question of the 19th gate.

The 19th gate at its deepest tribal level is about the sacrifice and the killing of animals. That is something that is going to have to stop, because it is destroying the productivity and the capacity of the land. It's depleting valuable water resources worldwide, and it's satisfying very few human beings as a percentage. We have to find a way to satisfy our dietary needs without killing animals, because when the change comes, we'll take the spirit of the creature with us. They have served us well in the program. This is not about morality; it is about health, the health of the planet. There are things that we are doing genetically and ways in which that kind of protein delivery system can be manipulated and grown. We are going to grow our meat in the future, but we're not going to grow it the way we do now. Today we grow it through a life, through a life with a personality crystal. Genetically we will be able to grow what we need that will only have a design - that's a totally different thing. It is a major transition that will take place about 300 or 400 years away. So it's not like it's around the corner, but it is something important to understand that this is a very important transition. It has to do with the personality crystals of mammals - if they are going to be within us, then stopping killing them is a really, really, really good idea.
